• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Is it possible to use Facetime to make a video of myself (playing guitar for my on-line teacher) ? I have a mac mini and 25" screen with camera. If not, how ?

You wouldn't use Facetime for this, but rather Quicktime Player which is also installed on your machine. Open QT and choose File->New Movie Recording and you will see a window with the input from your camera and microphone. Once you are ready, click the record button and go. The resultant video will be in MOV format and depending on the length of it, quite large. Play around with the recording times to figure out how big the files are and how you want to break them up if they become too large.

Either way, you'll likely have to employ some sort of a cloud sharing service (Dropbox, Box, etc.) to share the files with someone else. Another option is for you to upload them to a video sharing site like Youtube or Vimeo and not make it a publicly indexed video but share the specific link with people.

Ah thanks Ashwin. I do have Dropbox and once used a simple Cybershot camera to make a short song video on YouTube. But I'll play with QT on your advice, it seems easier than using a separate camera as I did before. And uploading to YouTube a useful way to go to avoid huge files in the mac. I have a 1TB Glyph but its cycling on full atm.

I used to do this once in a while using QuickTime Player and t works pretty well. After all, how else were people supposed to get a look at my marvelous visage?

I don't use that trick much though. The presence of townspeople on the front lawn with pitchforks and torches puts a damper on such behavior. ;D

I always convert the .mov files to .mp4 files afterwards.
Not only much smaller file size but I think also more compatible with typical Windows software

Good idea. That may make quite a difference depending upon the length of the file.

Last we heard from Brian, he was involved with finishing his education (obtaining a higher degree) and a new teaching job. And if as I suspect, he got married.... well you know how that goes. LOL
