    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.

How to duplicate existing iMovie

I have several iMovie projects on DVD and most of the original content no longer exists in the iMovie projects. At one time I was able to duplicate an existing project using this procedure

"Duplicate existing DVD or CD - Insert the DVD or CD in the drive and select it from the list on the left. Click File > New > Disk image from (disk name). Type a name, save to desktop. Choose "Read only". Click Save. After creation eject DVD. Select the disk image from the list on the left, click Burn, insert blank DVD when prompted."

However, this was for an earlier version of iMovie and since then I have moved up to iMovie 11 and this procedure no longer seems to work. Suggestions will be appreciated

Thank you

That should still work. Since you are duplicating an existing DVD the iMovie version shouldn’t matter.

What OS version are you using.

Just tried with a homemade dvd. In iMovie 11(v9.0.9) there isn't the option to do this. With the latest version, iMovie 10, the dvd appears in the Import window, but selecting it brings up the message: "None of the selected Files or Folders can be imported. Change the selection and try again".

Don’t try to do this from within iMovie. Use Disk Utility and follow the directions I linked to. Followed the directions for burning a disc image that are specific to El Capitan. You will end up with a disk that is a copy of the disc that you inserted.

If You want to import the DVDs into an iMovie-friendly format that can be done but it has to be converted with something like Handbrake first

Thanks Slydude. Worked beautifully but the estimated 30-60 minute actually took only5. Thanks for solving my problem

You're welcome. Glad that sorted things out for you.

I could have saved you a little time if I had realized you were trying to simply copy the disc instead of importing the file into iMovie.
