iMac, El Capitan, iMovie no longer supports chapters.

My project is with California fire threat my insurance company wants me to document contents of our house so I am filming a series of videos to do that.

I want to combine the videos into one movie with chapters for each room.

Each video clip will be a room so I will be combining about 15 rooms, and need chapter mark for each room.

And then either burn the movie to a DVD or load on a USB Drive for the insurance company documentation.

So I need to combine a series of videos and then insert chapters.

What is the best, easiest app to use for this type of project.

I was hoping I could just drag the video clips into a window in appropriate order and put a Chapter on each video clip.

Checking the web not sure what would be best for the project.

Hopefully a free shareware application exist to do this.

Check your Mac to see if you have the iDVD app. That is one of the best free Apple apps to use to create chapters. I still have my copy that I carried over from older versions of macOS. iDVD will die with the next version of macOS after Mojave since it's a 32 bit app. Since you're using El Capitan, iDVD should work for you.

iDVD

I used my Screen Sharing with my Mac G5 trying both iMovie, iDVD.

No sound on video with iDVD, and videos would not play properly with iMovie.

These apps are older so there seems to be compatibility problems with the videos (.mov).

Also slow. The iMac I have is really powerful so better using it.

Thanks

Subler

I gave it a try but could not make it do what I wanted.

I am sure it's me not understanding how this app works.

Drag, and dropped some video files into the app and saved file. I played it in Quicktime and it would only play one video clip.

I tried to enable all of them but when saving file it will only save two id's.

Also not sure how to add chapter titles at the start of each video clip.

Will this app allow you to merge video clips into a single movie, and then add chapters.

Just not sure how to use it.

I moved the iDVD app from the G5 to the iMac, El Capitan, 64 bit cpu.

It will not launch version 6.0.4 and the Apple Download for version 7 tells me that "An eligible iDVD application was not found in the location /Application".

It just amazes me how Apple continues to make not so good decisions for their customers and I have a lot of apple equipment.

There is always some not so good surprise with Apple.

This seems like it should be so simple. Maybe I will use my Windows PC's to do the task.

Why doesn't Apple post the App for people to use if it works for them.

It appears Toast can do this but who wants to spend $75 for a simple one time project.

Thanks

I haven't used this program personally but their description suggests it can do what you want. Apparently it can be done with the trial version. You used to be able to do this with the older version of Quicktime but I think you needed the Pro version which was not free.

Edit: I've used Toast before to do chapter markers. I think this is a limited function in the sense that the markers were applied based upon the number of minutes that elapsed. In other words, the chapters could were a set number of minutes eac that you ad a limited ability to change. Unless you are going to do tis often, can't find an alternative, or need Toast for other tasks, it's probably not worth the cost.

I don't think it's designed to use separate clips. I use it for an iMovie Project that I've Shared/Exported as a video file that I want to appear as a number of Chapters on a dvd.

I drop that video file into Subler, and then make a Plain Text file in Text Edit(Subler won't accept Rich Text files) designating the Chapter Numbers and the time positions(hh:mm:ss) that I want them in the video. Something like this:

00:00:33.000 chapter 1
00:09:41.000 chapter 2

Drop that into the Subler window, and it initially appears unticked. If you tick it, the chapters appear as above in the bottom window, but ticking is not required.

Then either click on the Share/Send To Queue button at the right of the Toolbar, or chose Send To Queue from the File Menu. You view the Queue in the Window Menu>Show Queue.

In the Queue window, select your file and click the Start/Play button to export/save the finished file. When you play the file in Quicktime, you should see three little "Menu" lines at the right of the control bar. Clicking on that should show the Chapters. Dropping that file into an iDVD window will produce a DVD with separate Chapters.

Thank you,

I will give it a try. I was hoping there was a way since I am using video clips to build the video just put chapter marks at each video clip with Game Room, Living Room, etc.

I can seem to find an app to that. Seems like a reasonable video option for inserting chapters.

So here is a sample that I tried. I added one chapter and named it Living Room, and sent it the queue, not sure what that does. Now what do I do with it to check the chapter setting. I do not have iDVD on the iMac. So how do I play the short video to check if the chapter was placed at 17 seconds.

Well, it puts it in the Queue. Did you then in the Queue window, select your file and click the Start/Play button to export/save the finished file?

After you have selected your file in the Queue Window and clicked the Start/Play button to export/save the finished file, open that video in Quicktime. At the right of the Controlbar you will see three "menu" bars:

Click on those and should see your Chapters:
