• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

never know where to post these odd questions....

I found some instruction on web on how to do this and not necessarily using iTunes.
I followed the instructions and thought I had it made but when I dragged my mp4 file to iPad screen..message popped up
saying I needed to download a video app in order for file to play and that it could be found in App Store.
I did not know which they wanted an am stuck.
does anyone know about this?

I moved your post to this section where it may be seen by more members with an intyerest in video.

It sounds like there might be something wrong with the settings when the file was saved as an mp4. Try member ferrar's suggestion of using VLC. The desktop version can play almost anything and I bet the IOS version can do likewise.

If that doesn't solve the problem post a link to the directions you're using to convert/transfer the file. perhaos we can identify the problem.

Suggest setting up Photostream which will automatically sync video from phone to iPad, or use AirDrop.
