• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.

    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Have a little bit of an issue with my new Macbook

I just got a new MacBook Pro and I went right into editing some videos I had been working on.

Just a few minutes ago I was going at a video in Hitfilm Pro and the screen went all funky, then gray, then the track pad didn’t work, and it finally shut down and restarted.

This is like the 3rd time it has happened in about a week or so.

I don’t recall stuff like this happening with my older MacBook. I bought this one (15” with touch bar) because I needed something with a little more juice and better graphics card...my old one was very basic.

Has anybody had this happen? Overheating maybe? If so, why?

It only occurs when I’m editing. And, to my knowledge, it’s not exactly stressed out or over worked. Again, my old 13” didn’t do this.

It’s brand new. And this is worrying me.

A couple of things, you have 14 calendar days from the date of purchase to return your MBP for a full refund and you have the 1 year AppleCare coverage for issues. Assuming you have caused it no damage (like dropping it, spilling liquids on it) then your first option (depending on how much work you think it is) is to just blindly return the MBP, get the full refund and then apply that to a totally new machine and go from there.

The second option is to make an Genius Bar appointment, take the MBP and start doing the editing and show the issue to them and have them look at it. They will look into it under the AppleCare warranty and if things are broken, they will potentially replace.

But if you are within the 14 day period, you are STRONGLY recommended to just return and get a new machine and immediately do the same kind of work to ensure that it behaves properly.

Ok, thanks.
I was hoping I wouldn’t have to return this, but I was able to contact B&H. I will be doing an exchange.

I was quoting the return policy assuming you purchased from Apple (either online or in-store). For anyone else (even authorized resellers of Apple), the return policy will vary.

In general, if you are having these kinds of issues that quickly after purchase, you likely got a lemon and should exchange as quick as you can. Otherwise, you end up in the warranty period whereby a lot of times the replacement is a refurbished machine and not new after they've sent it off for diagnosing for some unknown period of time. You don't want to deal with all that on a new machine.

Right on. The B&H Guy just asked what the issue was and asked if I wanted a replacement. I said yes. He didn’t ask if I drop dead or anything like that… Even though I didn’t. He just emailed me the return shipping label. Guy just asked what the issue was and asked if I wanted a replacement. I said yes. So hopefully this works out
