• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Old MPEG-4 files

A few years ago I created (converted) some videos to mp4. At the time, I had no trouble playing the videos using the Mac provided Quicktime player. Now Quicktime Player (Vers 10) cannot open those files. I also tried 4 or 5 different video converters with no success. I also tried the OS 10 utility "File Viewer". The files all have the extension, ".mp4". The Finder thumbnail displays the Quicktime logo, "MPEG-4 video", and the file size in GB.

I tried opening the files in Quicktime Player v7, but it only recognizes files with the ".mov" extension.

Any suggestions?

Try changing a copy of one file to the extension of m4v? Or, you should be able to use Handbrake to convert the files?

If you use Disk Utility to run Disk First Aid on the drive that contains the files are any errors reported?

I located one of the problem files on my backup hard drive, copied it to computer's drive and suceeded in opening it with Quicktime Player. Now I'm searching the backup drive for the other files.

Good thinking.
