iDVD replacement

Ever since the El Capitan upgrade, iDVD has not worked on my iMac. I have tried all kinds of things that have been suggested to me but to no avail. I am resigned to the fact that I need o replacement. However, I do have Creator pro installed in Parallels and that does fill in for emergencies, but it is missing a feature I must have. With iDVD, I was able to have DVDs begin automatically. This is a must have feature for me, so I am wondering if anyone has had experience with a DVD maker/burner for the Mac that lets me create an auto start DVD.

Do you mean autoplay as in start and show a menu, or start and run the film/video?
Have a look at Roxio's Toast. I believe that if you create a DVD without a menu, it will auto play the film.

I used auto play to mean that an inserted DVD will just begin playing. Most of my burned DVDs are for my granddaughter to watch in our car's entertainment system. So a lack of creating a menu in Roxio would give me what I want?

In the current version of Toast Titanium one of the options is to set auto play. It is available even if you choose to have a menu.

The full version of Toast is not cheap but there are less expensive versions in the App Store. One of them may have that same feature.

iDVD continues to work in El Capitan despite being discontinued some years ago -- IF you kept it up to date before it was discontinued.

Since beginning this discussion, I recalled using iDVD on wife's MacBook Pro with success. I just tried to burn a DVD and did so with no problems. I don't understand why I have problems with iMac. I keep it all up to date and even did a recent clean re-install of ElCapitan (although I did copy over everything else) I've just resigned myself to having to use a replacement on my iMac. The problem with iDVD shows up while rendering.

I think so, because if it autoplays, then the lack of a menu will cause to loop, ie replay, when it reaches the end.

I have the latest version of Roxio's Toast Titanium (14.1). I purchased mine direct from Roxio. It's not cheap but very, very comprehensive and easy to use.

I can confirm, having just tested it, that when you Click on Video, there is a checkbox option "Auto-play disk on insert". Check this - and it does.

Anyway to get the auto play effect that you are seeking, please see attached screenshot and notice the button selected on the lower edge. If you stick your movie in the greyed out box, as it says, it will auto play. Let us know how you get on.

When iDVD was working for me, this is just what I did to get the autoplay. My question: was this type of activity available on other DVD creation programs. I was informed it is on Toast

I can't play DVD's on my late 2015 27 iMac with El Capitan. I'm using the Apple Superdrive. It will play music CD's but not DVD's. I've also tried the drive in my MBP but again it just whirrs and spits the DVD out. Any advice?

The latest Apple external Superdrive will only work with those Macs which do not have a built in optical drive, as the firmware will not allow it. Does your MacBook Pro have a built in optical drive? As for the drive only playing music CDs and not DVDs, try using a can of compressed air to blow several short blasts into the drive. Also (and this may sound silly) make sure the Apple logo is facing down when you're using the drive. We have had folks try to use the drive upside down (Apple logo facing up).
