• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I'm shooting some longer videos (15 - 30 minutes) and would like to import to I Movie only the best footage that is taken, currently I'm importing the entire video into I Movie which can be time consuming. Is there a way to cut my MP4 file down to smaller clips prior to importing to I Movie?

You would need to use another piece of software, and the conversion would take more than the time it would take to import into iMovie.

15-30 minutes is not a long movie, btw. the import should not take that long.

If the file you are working with is starting as an mp4 and is going to stay an mp4 throughout the process try Squared 5 - MPEG Streamclip video converter for Mac and Windows. When saving the file, choose Save as rather than export.

As long as you aren't scaling the video or changing format the saves can be pretty quick. Even if you find that it does not meet your needs for this purpose it can be useful for a number of other things.
