• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Hi everyone,

I am trying to figure out how one converts all of the VIDEO_TS files of a created DVD back to a format which can be imported into programs such as iMovie for editing?

Is there a simple program that removes the MPEG-2 encoding and brings it back to it's natural digital video state?

thank you!

Once you change the format from an uncompressed NTSC, or PAL, to any other format be it, .avi, or a dvd format etc..

To my knowledge there is no undo button. This is due to the fact that you don't recompile a compressed format to an uncompressed one. It doesn't really work like a zip file, for lack of a better analogy.

You have a few options though. If you are happy with the quality from your files that you have now, and just want them to become an NTSC format ( which technically speaking it already is, its just not in that file format at the moment, tho video speaking it is NTSC at 29.97fps ) all you would have to do is capture that footage straight from your dvd, into software that does video capture.

The ghetto way to do it, would be. Firewire from your camera to the mac, and then connect the wire that you would normally view your footage from the camera on, a tv, yer RCA cable, and plug that in to the video out on yer dvd player. So, now hit play on the dvd player, put the camera in vcr mode, and then hit capture on yer computer.

If yer trying to capture straight from the dvd drive in yer mac, I don't know how to do that yet. I've never had to do that, but I should know very shortly.
