Honestly, you're better off starting a new thread specific for your needs rather then reviving a thread that's this old :)

You can look at the Elgato product, but keep in mind, playing - if just using what you see on the screen of the laptop as references - will be difficult if not impossible as there will be lag of up to a few seconds.

US HD camera as live streaming web cam?

Hi all,

My company is trying to convert our in-person classes to live web streaming classes using something like gotomeeting or dacast. I have an HD camera but I am told I need to get a capture card to hook my camera up to my mac (macbook pro or iMac). I see a few out there but I keep seeing issues with the compatibility with Macs. Does anyone know of an external capture card that will work to convert our HD camcorder to a web cam? I'm afraid to buy pinnacle or something only to find out it won't help with the live streaming aspect. Thanks.

Let's start with a few basics here so we know what we are talking about. Can you tell us a bit more about the Macs you would like to use for this project (memory, hard drive space, etc).

If you can also provide the make and model of video camera that would help as well. Some cameras do not specifically mention Mac compatibility but will work. Do your files show up on the Mac at all.

The camera is a Sony HDR-XR160. yes the files show up on the Mac just fine. I have a iMac 2.93 GHz Intel core i7, 4 GB Ram, 250 GB HD. But more than likely I will set-up my bosses Macbook Pro during the stream because of the location. I don't have the specs of her machine handy today, she's on the road but I'll get them. I know at least that she is using Snow Leopard, as am I but that is far as I know for her. (Sorry)

We have a gotomeeting account, which initially we plan on using to do the web stream, we just need to figure out how to get the Sony cam to act as a web cam. Thanks!

That was quick. If what I am seeing is correct you should not need a capture card to pull existing footage off of that camera. Leave the folder structure intact and navigate to the .mts file. see the this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3598909?start=0&tstart=0

For basic editing you might give a program called MPEG Streamclip a try. Squared 5 - MPEG Streamclip video converter for Mac and Windows To do some fancier editing the files can be converted to work with iMovie.

As far as streaming from the camera goes it should be possible. QuickTime X should recognize it. Perhaps some of our other video wizards can be more help there.

Thanks. At this point I don't have need for editing video...not yet anyway.

To make sure I'm understanding, if I am only worried about trying to get my camera set up to be web streaming capable I don't need a capture card? My biggest issue right now is trying to get the live footage from the camera to the computer. I only have HDMI Out on my iMac, and an HDMI Out on the camera. It seems HDMI to USB doesn't exist really, so what are my options in the live video from the camera to the computer?

Whatever method ends up working we will be plugging this video into a gotomeeting.com session. We just want a nicer image then a standard web cam provides. Plus, there will be zooming in/out of different items while the presenter is presenting.
