I have a few questions that i need some counseling on.As i have found this to be the most helpful MAC forum on the net.
1.I have an iBook G3 but the drive only reads cds.I have Tiger on DVD and i wanted to install it on the iBook.I actually wont have the disk for another day.My question is will the DVD load if i put it in the iBook? If not can i connect an external DVD drive to the firewire port on my iBook and install from the external DVD drive being connected to the iBook or not?
2.I have restore CDs that are labeled iMac.If i wanted to revert back to OSX 10.2.8 can i use the iMac cds that i have? The cds are:
Mac OSX and Mac OS 9.2.2 software restore cds 1 -3
and Mac OSX install cds (2 of these)for Mac OS version 10.2 CD version 1.0.
It also came with an apple hardware test cd that is for an iMac that i tried and it does not work.
Any help on this matter is greatly appreciative!!

Hi,

1. To upgrade your iBook to Tiger via an ext DVD Drive:

Basically the external DVD drive needs to be modern, self powered, FireWire equipped and using the latest firmware available for it AND it's got to allow you to boot from it when it's connected to the iBook.

So let's start, connect the external drive to the Mac, insert the Tiger DVD into it and restart your iBook while holding the “Option” key.

After a while, your iBook should present you with a list of available boot volumes, which should include the external drive — you may need to wait a few minutes until you can click on it but that’s normal.

From there on, simply follow the installation instructions.

2. Regarding the installation discs, there are two types: Full Retail Software & Install Discs & the Model Specific System Restore Discs which are sold with any new mac.

The Retail version has, in the case of Tiger, a large white X on the Label while the System Restore Discs are grey.

So the CD's that are labelled iMac are only for whatever specific iMac model that they were made for so you won't be able to use them on the iBook. The same goes for the upgrade to Tiger ... you'll need to buy the Retail Version of the Discs, AFAIK.

The Tiger is the Full retail.
As far as the Cds they say iMac on them. And you are correct some say system restore disk and then some say software recovery.and they all are grey.
As for the Tiger. It will be here sometime today(Yea i know there is no delivery on Sunday). My friend that is an IT tech purchased it but never had the chance to install it on his iBook G4 because of work and he somehow just got leapord and installed it on his iBook. So he is giving me the Tiger DVD.

how can i tell if it will allow me to boot from it?Its a brand new Sony external DVD burner(Well only 3 months old).I have plugged it to the mac to install applications that i have dled from a friends server and burnt to disk in order to load onto the PPC,because its not as fast as my regular computer.I accomplished this without any problems.I can put a dvd and watch movies on my mac as well with a dvd in the drive so i guess it will let me boot up like that. How can i actually verify?

Did you try the above? If so what was the result? Just out of curiosity, what iBook do you have?

The DVD will be here today. This is what i did to test to see if the External DVD(Which is a Sony DVD RW Model number:AW-Q170A)player will do any kind of booting.I put one of those iMac disks in.well i tried to boot from it(I think i held it down for 45 seconds and nothing, even though i could hear it whizzing the disk in it)It booted up normally.well it opened the installation folder and when i clicked the installation icon,it said something like(this is in short of course)Your machine will know shut down once you hit restart to start the installation.then there is a big restart button at the bottom of the words.Thats as far of a test that i have done.

Ending,
My external drive has the most current firmware.A friend told me that all i need to do is just pop the dvd in and im good without having to hold the button down, that it will tell me installation will began once i hit restart.
My machine states in the about this mac the following:
memory:320MB
Processor:500 Mhz
Power PC:G3

Did you try the above? If so what was the result? Just out of curiosity, what iBook do you have?

The final verdict......I upgraded successfully without having to hold any buttons down. This is what i did:
1.let my ibook boot up with the firewire and tiger dvd within the external Sony DVD RW.
2.It recognised the external and opened the dvd content menu. There was a big button that said install tiger.I clicked that and it said in order to install this software your machine needs to be restarted.I did so.
When my ibook restarted i did not push any buttons, but inturn let it start the boot up process(just to see if it would work without pressing/holding any keys down )and then my external burner/player started whizzing and then the option to install tiger was there! Its installed and successfully. It gave me the option to delete my old OSX and replace with tiger(which i did).
So for those who dont want to purchase the combo drive and want the dvd for tiger. As long as your ext. dvd burner/player is current this process will work!
mind you i never had to do a firmware update or none of that.My external dvd player is between 3-4 months old...!!!!thanks for all the help guys!
