Which OS is required to allow a Series 5 to unlock an iMac?

You need a Mac that is post 2013 and running at least macOS Sierra. You'll also need a Watch later than Series 3 (you're covered here) running at least WatchOS 3.

With those requirements met, here are the instructions on setting up this feature.

Followed the instructions and got this:

- - - Updated - - -

I followed the "Learn More" troubleshooting instructions too.

- - - Updated - - -

Also: macOS Sierra Version 10.12.6

Perhaps I need to update to Catalina?

So what operating system do you have on your Mac?

That’s what the message is saying. In effect, you have to update, or more likely, upgrade your OS. As was mentioned by our Moderator in post #2.

I think you must also have both Bluetooth and Wifi enabled on the iMac for it to work. The  watch, iPhone and iMac are all interconnected to do the unlocking.

That's why I'm confused. I have the requirements Ashwin stated and yet it's not working.

Try rebooting the iMac and maybe a boot of the iPhone as well. I seem to recall even once having to reboot the  Watch as well.

Apple's website is a little confusing, but you need High Sierra. Here's the part relevant to you:

  • To use Auto Unlock with Apple Watch Series 3 or newer, your Mac needs macOS High Sierra or later.

If you want to go further and approve admin actions with your watch also, you'll need to be on Catalina.
