Look in System Preferences > Security & Privacy. Then select Advanced, and make sure you have not selected the "Log Out after ?? minutes" option.

Good one Bob. Many folks forget about that setting. We had another member not too long ago who ran into the same problem. Apparently, that particular setting somehow gets implemented by mistake when folks set up their time out for a screen saver or screen shut off.

I think you're right about that setting being triggered when someone sets up a screensaver. I suspect that it's wether being triggered accidentally by some users. In most cases I think it may be an assumption made by the OS. In other words, "you're dimming/hiding your screen surely you don't want someone to come along and discover what you're doing without having to enter a password".

It's more than that, logging out, when you are logged in, is not always wanted. I have turned that on a couple of different times on my Macs, but after the second time I used it, I realized, it wasn't needed, at least for my current setup anyway.

Tricky setting to find! When I upgraded my MBAir to Catalina, I was being logged out my account the next morning - finally checked the 'Advanced' settings and indeed that setting was 'ticked off' - no problem since removing the check mark! Good reminder! Dave

I wonder if that setting is being ticked to "on" as part of the upgrade/installation process. If so, it would be consistent with some of the other security and privacy features introduced/changed in Catalina.

I don't think so. Mine is un-ticked, has been that way for years and never changed with any upgrade, both over-the-top and nuke/pave.
