I just upgraded to Catalina and it replaced my iTunes with Apple Music (grrr). I have no use for Apple Music or iTunes Match. Supposedly I should be able to sync my Music playlists using the method outlined in the links, but "Apply" is greyed out. Any help? (brand new iPhone XR is up-to-date with iOS 13).

See my reply to your original post here: https://www.mac-forums.com/forums/m...date-itunes-sierra-10-13-5-a.html#post1839899

This what I said:

If you are on macOS High Sierra - as you talked about throughout this thread - you cannot have converted from "iTunes" app to the "Music" app.

What you call "Apple Music", is an initially free (then $9.99/month after 3 months) Apple subscription service. You can reject the offer.

It's very important to recognise the difference between the "Music app" which replaced iTunes only in Catalina, from "Apple Music" which sits alongside either "iTunes app" or "Music app" as a subscription add on.

Bottom line - either you Upgraded to macOS Catalina unintentionally; or you updated macOS High Sierra in which case iTunes remains.

Ian

In your other post, you discussed with all of us how to Update your macOS High Sierra from 10.13.5 to 10.13.6.

What you appear to have done is Upgrade to macOS Catalina. This changes "iTunes app" to "Music app" - not Apple Music which is a subscription service which has been around quite some time and works with both iTunes and Music apps. Nor is it anything to do with iTunes Match.

With that out the way, can you elucidate further on what your problem is? Only too delighted to help now that we understand what you have done and solved the terminology problem.:);D

Ian, thanks for the clarification. Yes, I did end up upgrading. I'd like to be able to sync my playlists to my iPhone without paying for a subscription. Is this possible? (See screenshots in post if needed). Thank you!

Absolutely! That's how most (or many) of us do it.:)

For you, possibly the easiest way is to connect your iPhone XR to your Mac via USB cable. Then open the Music app (formerly iTunes). I don't have macOS Catalina, but I believe the syncing process is now via Finder. That is to say, with the Music app open and your XR connected, open Finder. The iPhone should show up in the column far left. You click on that, choose your playlists and any other music you want synced, then click on sync.

Instead of my wittering on about this; I've found a good site that explains the process in detail:D - How to sync iPhone to Mac in macOS Catalina without iTunes - 9to5Mac

Or this: How to sync your iPhone and iPad with your Mac in macOS Catalina | iMore

Hope that helps.

I don't know what I was doing wrong before, but I restarted Music and my iPhone, and it worked. Thank you so much!

That's great news. Well done.
