my edrive was created by techtool pro. I deleted it wondering if it was causing problems since TTP 12 has some features that does not work with AFPS formatted drives, but it's been upgraded for Catalina. makes no sense to me.

thanks for the pic that was helpful. :)

I would avoid using third party tools on APFS drives for at least a while. Apple has not released the full technical details on APFS so far, so developers are sort of working in the dark. Some things, like Carbon Copy Cloner, have figured out how to do what they do, but looks like TTP that manipulate the drive directly simply don't have the details to be made to work accurately for now. Maybe down the road Apple will release more about APFS and those tools can be useful, but for now, I'd avoid them, as I said.

I second what Jake stated about third party disk tools and APFS. Avoid using Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior as neither one is currently compatible with APFS. Apple has been very close hold on releasing the specs for APFS so we can't really blame utility developers such as Tech Tool Pro if they are not compatible.

Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper work okay but for now only Carbon Copy Cloner can create the correct Recovery Partition for Mojave and Catalina.

thanks for all the help everyone. things seem ok for now. perhaps tech tool pro was causing the issues? not sure. something I'll keep an eye on.... when micromat sold me the tech tool upgrade, they didn't mention that it wont do certain things on APFS.... they just said its Catalina compatible so I figured I was ok to use it. False advertising there on their part IMHO.

I suspect that "Catalina compatible" means it is 64 bit, so it will run. Maybe "Catalina useful" should be a term to use?
