I went to the Apple Store and asked the question. The answer was Catalina is very new and might not be compatible with third-party application yet. I was told to downgrade to Mojave and sync my books. I did but, to my surprise, Mojave still could not sync from the Books app to my iPad. Then, I checked again and my problem was not uncommon, the recommendation was that I should sty with High Sierra which used iBooks and could sync from iTunes to iPad. I am sure High Sierra would work as it was where I was coming from but was so frustrated that neither Mojave nor Catalina worked with iPad using their new Books app. Can anyone confirm if my understanding is correct?

I think you got bad advice from the Apple Store. I have Catalina and it syncs Books just fine. Catalina is new, but already is up to 10.15.2, which is normally a pretty stable version, with two updates already. I'd call Apple support and get a real advisor instead of a sales clerk.

I am now having Mojave 10.14.6 and iPad 13.3. Can they sync? I could not make it work though!

I checked all the settings and, unlike Catalina the other day, I can open the books with the Books app of Mojave, but still I could not sync.

I don't know. I have Catalina 10.15.2 and iOS 13.3 on my iPad and they sync, as I said. I don't know if Mojave can sync with the latest iPadOS version.

Yes, I am in iCloud, iCloud is set for Books and Books on the iPad is set as well. Here are my settings

Mac: System Settings, AppleID, iCloud Drive, Books is checked to enable sync.
Mac: Books/Preferences/General, "Sync collections, bookmarks and highlights across devices" is checked.

iPad: Settings/Books under Syncing both Reading Now and iCloud Drive are ON.
iPad: Settings/AppleID, Books is ON.

Thinking about it, Catalina changed by getting rid of iTunes, creating Music, Books, TV. And that is what I see on 13.3.
The Mac is at Catalina, so if you have gone back to Mojave, the System Preferences will be different. I don't think iTunes will sync with Books, Music and TV.

For what it’s worth, and that may not be much! , I am on Mojave and my iDevices are all on iOS 13.3 - and all my books sync across those devices I have chosen.

I don’t want them on my iPhone as I cannot read them on it, but I chose my iPad and all is well.

I’m on a short pre-Christmas break at the moment so I cannot confirm my iMac settings, but from memory, they are very similar to what Jake describes - in general.

I have an older iMac on High Sierra and it also gets all my books.

I realise that this is of limited help to pettycash, but it does establish that syncing of books across Macs and iOS devices is possible.

To Jake and Ian, are the books you are syncing purchased through Apple, or do you have books that have been converted to epub, that are syncing as well? I don't have any non Apple Books to test with, so I just wanted clarification for this?

To pettycash, were the books ever on the iPad, with the previous iOS? I'm sorry, this thread is too long for me to re-read the whole thread again. When you upgraded the iPad, did you do a clean install or just the upgrade in place?

Bob, my books are a mixture of things from Apple, along with some that were converted to epub format, including some from the Gutenberg project. And at least two of them are PDFs which I imported because I wanted them with me. And all of them sync just fine.

I guess I can conclude the thread with the following as I have installed and re-installed versus mac OS last night:

First, thanks to Jake for confirming it works for him with Catalina, with the detailed settings provided, which is very encouraging out of all the recent frustrations with upgrading and downgrading (e.g. Catalina does not work with iOS12 and Mojave cannot work with iPadOS13..etc...). I finally made it work with this: Catalina - 10.15.2, iPadOS 13.3

Catalina 10.15.1 and Mojave do not work for me because of their new Books app - don't think they are compatible with third-party conversion software as most of my books were converted from txt toe pub by Calibre Management. If 10.15.2 did not work for me as my last resort, I planned to downgrade it to High Sierra which was where I came from as it still used iTunes with the iBook (not the new Books) app.
