Can you explain what the sharing file in System Pref….is for and should I have some sections ticked off?

You should have ALL of the options in Sharing (in System Preferences) turned off. Each of those allows you to share specific parts of your system with others. Screen Sharing, for example, allows others on your network to be able to login to your screen and control. File Sharing allows you to share a folder with people and so on.

In 99% of the home use cases, you will not be sharing anything except MAYBE an old printer that is physically connected to one machine. Most modern printers are network based and accessible by all.
