looks like its saving apps I use in the dock (red arrows)? is there a way to turn this off? its annoying. New to Mojave it seems, High Sierra never did this.

It was new to Mojave. It's the most recently used Applications. You can control it in System Preferences/Dock and uncheck the "Show recent applications in Dock" option. May require a reboot or a terminal command "killall Finder" to restart Finder. Can't remember that last bit, it's been so long.

I'm still on macOS Mojave and with my OS, no reboot is required whether activating or deactivating this setting.

PS Same with the iPad - on/off, no restart.

Yep, tested it and no reboot or restart required. Works immediately.

Just a side track to iPadOS and the 'recently opened' dock option relative to 'Split Screen' and multitasking - in Catalina macOS, split screen is now much easier using the green button on an opened app - but in iPadOS, having a desired app in the 'recently opened' dock space facilitates entering multitasking. For those not that familiar w/ iPad split screen mode, the pics below from my iPad Pro illustrate the quick process - pic 1 shows 'Notes' in the recently open space (and will stay there until replaced - other apps wanted can be opened/closed for the same reason); in pic 2, Safari is opened to the Mac Forums and the dock has been brought up; and finally pic 3, the Notes icon was dragged to the right (could be the left) and 'split screen' activated - I was then able to copy the post from the forums into my Notes app - use this feature often - more HERE - Dave :)
