As you probably have noticed, you will receive a notification that an update is available; likely Catalina.

Even though you can ignore it, you will still see a small number 1 over the System Preferences icon that will not go away by ignoring the update or change the settings in "Software Update", Advanced.

However, there is a Terminal Command that will shut it off until you're ready to install Catalina:

sudo softwareupdate --ignore "macOS Catalina"

To turn it back on again:

sudo softwareupdate --reset-ignored

There are other updates that are required for Catalina, too. How about those?

I know there was at least one for Safari. And someone mentioned a firmware update, was that included with Catalina?

The same Safari update installed in Mojave so that should be okay. The firmware update apparently is not for all Macs but just certain ones. As far as I can determine from other information, only the 2018 Mini received the firmware update during the Catalina installation. There could have been other Macs affected by the firmware update.

And for those who really avoid anything to do with using Terminal, just delete the offending System Preferences icon(it's just an alias) from the Dock, so its not so obvious and annoying with its Red number badge staring one in their face!!!

PS: Finally, I finally get to post my comment here, but had to modify the text drastically in order to do so. I have no idea what's going on or what the offending word or words were if that was the cause. Oh well...
