I thought it might be useful to give this subject its own thread rather than have it buried in a Catalina thread - mostly because U just discovered something new related to that.

History (please let me know of corrections to the history):
"Save As..." had been an option under the File menu in macOS for as long as I can remember.
I use that command many, many times a day.

When Apple came out with macOS 10.7, Lion, the "Save As..." option had disappeared causing a bit of an uproar in the Apple community
What happened to Save As? - Apple Community

In macOS, Mountain Lion, Apple brought "Save As..." back, but not in the way it was originally implemented in macOS 10.6 and earlier, but in a somewhat awkward way by having to select using the option key - when that was pressed, the File>Duplicate option changed to the "Save As..." option.

Then, eventually it was discovered, that one could set up a keyboard shortcut that brought the "Save As..." option back permanently under the "File" drop down (between "Save" and "Duplicate" at least for macOS 10.11 (ElCapitan) and 10.14 (Mojave).
That keyboard shortcut does not work for macOS 10.15 (Catalina), for that OS one has to use the Option key to bring up Save As... as an alternative to "Duplicate"

So much for the history part.
What I noticed today on ElCapitan, with the keyboard shortcut for Save As... not enabled, is that "Save As... is strangely enough actually an option in Apple Mail under the "File" menu drop down. "Save" is dimmed out and "Save As..." is shown to use the normal "Save" shortcuts.
The "Duplicate" option doesn't exist in Apple Mail at all.

In Mojave, the "Save As" Menu option is not in the Preview app, but it is there in all the LibreOffice modules. And it was there for LibreOffice when I tested Catalina yesterday.

Did you use the System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts to create a new "Save As..." shortcut to get this to work, or was it just there or maybe it was using some previously modified .plist file???

Just clarifying.

In Apple Mail, the "Save As..." option in the file dropdown is there either way - with the Save As... keyboard shortcut activated or not activated.
Doesn't make any difference

For an image in preview however, if the keyboard short cut is not activated, ie as shipped by Apple, you need to hold down the option key which then changes "Duplicate" into "Save As"
In keyboard shortcuts you have to type Save As... exactly like that.
Make any changes, ie two periods or four periods or anything else, then everything reverts to normal, ie you need to hold the option key to get Save As... for everything except Mail (it seems)

Took me three frustrating tries to eventually get Mojave installed completely with all my data transferred - just completed that this morning.

But I can finally report that the "Save As..." option works on Mojave as well - checked it with Preview and an image which is where I use it most of the time, also checked it with Keynotes which is one application where the Macworld article said their "fix" did not work.

I believe the "Save As" option works with the new iWork Apps which are now separate: Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. I don't use Preview very often but it's good to know it works there as well.

One of the most annoying things with the more recent versions of OS X (IMHO) is the lack of consistancy, and it really doesn't help when one is attempting to get a "supported" hack working consistantly, if even possible.

Glad to read you seem to be getting some success, and it sure beats doing any hacking with ResEdit if you ever did any of that back in the OS System days!!! :Blushing:
