Just an FYI for the forums. I looked for it on Friday, but it wasn't available then. I never checked over the weekend.

It says it's an 8.09 GB file download.

Catalina was released today (Oct 7, 2019) as Bob pointed out above.

Please make sure you have a good backup strategy in place that you can recover to if Catalina is not to your liking.

Also be aware of the 32 bit application restriction that Catalina implements. 32 bit applications and even some 64 bit applications with 32 bit dependencies will not work. Also be sure to check with the RoaringApps site to see if your apps are compatible.

Have fun. :smile

Strange that it isn't a top banner on the App Store, I had to search for it. The entry says it's 4.9GB in size.

I also found out I needed an update to Safari (ver 13.0.2), before I could install Catalina.

I always run TM after I get the upgrade/update file downloaded.

If you go through System Preferences, it says the file is 8.09 GB

I've got the supplemental update and Safari updates only. I guess the supplemental update is a pre-req to Catalina.

Definitely pertinent information. Also, four other things to consider:

1. The initial release will most likely contain bugs. The .1 release will most likely come out within the next 4 weeks, so it might be best to wait until then.

2. As someone already pointed out, make sure all your peripherals will work with Catalina. It may be necessary to downloaded updated drivers for some/all of one's peripherals.

3. As I have said many times already, same with 64 bit software. This site is a useful source of such compatibility information:

Application Compatibility Table — RoaringApps

4. After downloading the installer file, DO NOT let it continue with the installation process. Quit that when the download completes, and make a copy of that installation file in another location on your Mac.

Hope folks don't mind me posting this here (I will try and find the other thread), but this post on macworld is perfect timing:

How to create a bootable macOS Catalina installer drive | Macworld

Interesting that it does not mention the excellent program DiskMaker X. However, there is currently not a version compatible with Catalina. I suspect it will be released soon.

And of course, as chscag mentions, 32 bit applications will no longer work with Catalina. Myself, I have 2 of them: Quicken 2007, and a calculator program entitled Magic Number Machine. I also have Quicken 2017, so that issue is resolved. But can anyone recommend a 64 bit free calculator that is similar to Magic Number Machine?

It’s weird, I started the download when I started this thread. I got an error, so I restarted my Mini and began the download again, that was when I found the Safari update was needed. So I installed that, and began the Catalina upgrade download again and got another error. The first two times the downloads took about 8-10 minutes. This time it’s telling me 3 more hours, and it’s been downloading for 20-30 minutes. Now, just got the error again.

Restarting download.

Strange that Catalina requires the latest version of Safari. One would expect that new (or newer) version to be included in Catalina. Also, I rarely use Safari, preferring Google Chrome (and to a lesser extent, Firefox). Such a detriment to downloading Catalina is rather surprising, and not sure why such a hindrance would be there.

Quite possibly such a hindrance would be the case if one was upgrading to the newer OS, instead of downloading that installer for the new Mac OS. I've always downloaded the full installation file whenever I want to do such a full installation, otherwise for "in the same OS", I always download the Combo Update. And speaking of that, never had an issue with the Combo Update, no matter which versions of Apple software I had (but do not use).

I guess the supplemental update is a pre-req to Catalina.

Why would that be the case if one is doing a complete installation of the new Mac OS? Seems strange that the new Mac OS would not contain such required updates. I've never encountered any issues with that.

Forgot to mention one other thing regarding software compatibility. With this first release of Catalina, I suspect we'll begin to see more and more software updates, for software that needs it. I know that on Titanium's site for Onyx, it actually states that the new version of Onyx will be released shortly after Catalina comes out.

Thank heaven I created an installer USB for Mojave last night

OK, I just successfully downloaded the full installer for Catalina on my Mac Mini, and encountered no issues at all. And I have V12.1.2 of Safari (again, I hardly ever use it). Not sure why folks who don't have the latest version of Safari are having issues. Again, this has never happened to me.

Of course, I stopped the actual installation process after the download completed, and have already removed that Installer file from my Applications folder (no need for it to take up space).

I created one on Saturday, using DiskMaker X, although as far as I can tell, my SuperDuper! backups for both of my Macs on the 2 external SSDs are clean.

Wise comments from so many of our learned members - 32 bit apps and, as our Admin chscag reminded us, 64bit apps with 32 bit dependencies. And many have commented on peripherals.

Of all these peripherals, I have a suspicion that Printers may be the major stumbling block.

I was rather surprised to see it there, tucked into its own little spot, and in it's annoying very light grey colour font that Apple seems to love using, and this one is almost to the point of being unreadable, and interestingly, released under the utilities banner.

I hope it's not because they were embarrassed to release it and just stuck it there without much fanfare.

Anyway, there it will sit and stay as my 2011 iMac cannot use it.

Yeah, Patrick, not sure why Apple is kind of hiding it.

Also, after my post above about successfully downloading Catalina, I use Google Chrome. So, I just tried it with V12.1.2 of Safari, and again it worked. Again, just seems baffling why some folks are being told they need the latest version of Safari to download it. Obviously (at least for me), that is not the case at all.

Understand. For me, the primary peripheral this could affect is my Canon Printer. For High Sierra and Mojave, Apple already had the drivers for it (and many other printers) within the OS. Wonder how soon we can see what is the situation for Catalina.

I've been running various incarnations of the Catalina Public Beta since it was released. With one exception (Beta 2) I haven't had issues with my Brother all-in-one. It worked under Mojave and has worked under Catalina. I'm not really using their extra software. I tend to rely on the equivalent macOS app.

That's encouraging, Slydude. I am anticipating no issues with my Canon Printer.

Yeah, Patrick, not sure why Apple is kind of hiding it.

Actually, the primary way to obtain macOS updates and security updates is through System Preferences, Updates and not the Mac App Store.
