yep, that is why I went for it..... now theirs another issue... the CD DVD works great, until I put the front cover back on. then it wont eject the CD that is in there. I cant figure out why, I never touched the CD drive while working on the hard drive. Im stumped. tried loosening the screws for the cover and that did not help. any ideas?

CD works fine and ejects fine until I screw the front cover back on.

I bet you'll find the only fiddly part was applying new double sided tape to the black plastic clip and foam pad that held the temp sensor to the HD. Due to the iMac's age and value you had nothing to lose doing the job yourself.

It sounds like the front cover needs some Dremel work and/or filing or preferably some alignment done that is currently blocking the ejection of the CD/DVD disc.

Try using a wooden tongue depressor in the CD/DVD slot to possibly help keep the openings aligned. It doesn't take very much misalignment to stop the disc from being ejected.

with the front cover off, the CD works normal until I tighten the display bolts tighter. then it seems to squeeze the CD drive in so it wont eject? strange. still trying to figure it out....

Try looking at some of the photos and videos at iFixit for your model and see if there is some stage you might be missing when reassembling the cover:

Also make sure if the optical drive has an eject button to the side of the slot, that it is not interfering and holding the cover from sliding into place. Not all Optical drives have the eject button.

thanks I'll check that out. with the cover off the CD drive works unless I snug the bolts down holding the screen (red arrows in pic).... then it wont insert or eject a disc. and it does the same when the cover is put back on. I've been googling this and Im finding nothing... almost ready to just forget it since I rarely use that old imac.

local mac repair shop says they have seen issues with CDROM play if the display is bolted on too tightly. I have witnessed this... so I loosened bolts on right side of display and the optical drive works normal, until I put the cover on. the cover only goes on one way, cant figure out for the life of me why the CD wont go in/out when the cover is on.... still tinkering with this...

Is the slot in the optical drive and the slot in the cover just not aligning properly when the screws are tightened???

And are the screws being tightened the ones that hold the cover in place??? If so, I guess you can't leave them loose. But are you also over-tightening them perchance???

I'm just trying to visualize what the heck might be going on and why the cover is not fitting into place.

And were all the screws holding the screen the same length? Is it possible that there were shorter ones for that side that are now in the wrong places?
