Hello!

I have an issue with my macbook pro, somebody seems to be able to hack into the OS and make sure your macbook is slow as ****.. I have been running monero cryprocurrency deamon and it downloaded less then 40GB but the process in activity monitor showed around 200GB, also google helper process showed 23GB written.. it is very dangerous for SSD macs that you cannot change or modify. I think they might make OS slow by messing with system bus or something... any way to defend against attack ?

Hi, and welcome to the forum

Can you post the specs for the Mac you are using.

What makes you think someone hacked into the OS?
On the surface looking at your Activity Monitor window, it looks to me as if you don't have enough RAM for the number of applications you are running at the same time. So your Mac is constantly swapping data from RAM to the drive (and eventually back) to free up RAM to run the applications.

On my Mac, the reads in/sec and the reads out/sec are both 0

You are misreading the numbers. The 264.44GB bytes written is NOT storage used. It is simply bytes written. It could be the SAME byte written 264.44 Giga times, or 264.44 Gigabytes all written at once. That is not a measure of storage consumed, but activity. So when you get file A and then another copy of file A and overwrite the original, the counter ticks up twice for the two writes. Given how intensive operations like blockchain work, with a ton of steps, that activity can create a lot of temporary storage use, with each one clicking up the "bytes written" counter.

When you right-click on the drive icon and then select "Get Info" how much space is free? Not having sufficient free space on the boot drive can cause a real hit in performance.

I know it is not storage used, only 40GB of hdd is used and of that only 20 is being used by blockhcian... how can it get 270GB written in less than 3 days if only 40GB is being used with only usage being surfing the web... and it slows down my mac as ****

What slows down the Mac? Disk writes, particularly to an SSD, should not slow down your Mac. What symptoms do you have of this slowdown? Is it in your browser, or another application or what? Please be as specific as you can because we cannot see your Mac to see what is going on.

Oh, and by the way, you did say that the writes were disk space used, in post #3:
I like how you think but no.. syncing blockchain that used up 20GB on my HDD and sufring the web cannot produce 264GB disk usage, no way...

Thanks, but this is only half the information.

Specifically:
How much RAM is installed, is it just the original 4 Gigs or was the Mac upgraded to 8 Gigs
Size of hard drive? The original one is a 5400 rpm spinner - is that still the original drive?
And how much storage is used on the drive? Take a look at "Get Info"

Can you also post the Activity Monitor Memory window to see if trashing is an issue
And if it's the original drive, I would check the health of the drive as well.

But I really very much doubt that anyone has "hacked into the OS"
