Has anyone managed to install TWAIN SANE scanner software on Mojave? It was working fine for me on an old Canon Lide 30 through High Sierra but broke with Mojave. The old developer (Mathew Ellert?) has not produced an update in years. There is a current project

GitHub - genose/macos-scanner-interface-twain-sane-binaries: TWAIN Sane Scanner Driver for MacOS (Yosemite 10.10 to Mojave 10.14)

But I cannot get it to work.

And, yes, we have a newer scanner, but I like the idea of keeping the ancient Canon running. It’s very fast when using scanimage from the command line.

I believe a scanners speed has to do with settings for the scan (mostly).

What I meant was that if you start the scan from the command line with scanimage the scan begins right away as there is no GUI app to get in the way.

Well, it turns out this was easier than I thought with a little help from a Raspberry Pi.

Since there seems to be no SANE backend for Mojave, I decided to use a Raspberry Pi.

Installing and configuring SANE on the Pi was pretty easy.

The existing AppleScript and Bash script only had to be slightly modified. So, now I can remotely run the scan from my iMac, the scanner hangs off a R Pi and the image ends up on the iMac, converted to JPEG and opened in Graphic Converter.

The Canon LiDE 30 Lives!

Well done, Mike. Even if I understood half of what you were talking about, it would still look impressive.;D

It's really not that impressive. The actual impressive part is that I actually started and finished a project all in one day….

That's quite a work-around and from your comment, I thought you might appreciate this small poster and in case you might like to go back to your old ways: :Smirk:

Thanks for that thought, Patrick.

And, now for a bit of irony (?). Soon after I finished the software project and got the scanner working again it had a mechanical failure. Now it will only scan half a page before the scan head stops moving and starts making terrible noise.

I'm hoping it's just a low voltage problem. The Pi's USB ports were really not designed to power something like a flatbed scanner. Powered USB hub should be delivered today.

From that description it sounds like something is jamming the moving scanner head.

Like has a shipping/moving block fallen into the shipping mode slot??? That can cause the cogged belt to jump on the cogged drive causing a heck of a noise.

It's working fine this morning so it must have been a temporary jam or a voltage problem.
