Mail: How to Save

I use Earthlink as my ISP. When I get a message that my mail capacity is "full," I have to go to Earthlink Web Mail and make deletions. The problem is that my deletions from Web Mail also delete whatever is in my InBox on my OS. I'm a dummy, but I know you guys know what this is all about, so here's my question:

How do I save the e-mails that are in my InBox on my OS?

P.S. I hope this isn't going to be too complicated. I'm old, and I'm tired, and technology just isn't as much fun as they promised it would be.

Hi Marrk

Not to be too technical, I suspect your Mail account is IMAP; so what to do is to move your messages OUT of Inbox into another mailbox created and saved on your Mac. You can have as many as you like.

Then when you delete things from the Web, your messages saved in the other mailboxes will be unaffected.

Inbox is not ideal for storing messages. Better, as I said, to create a mailboxes on your Mac for all the things you want to keep.

Ah, right. Are these "other" mailboxes save "On My Mac" or "iCloud"?

Like this: when you create a new Mailbox on your Mac, it looks like this:



But if you click on the exposure triangles, it gives these options:



What you really want is for all your Mailboxes to be "On My Mac" - UNLESS - you want them to appear on all your devices including the Web. Some like that because they can compose, read and review their emails on all their devices. BUT if you delete something from the Web or any device, it goes from them all.

So, on your Mac, at least, you want your mailboxes to stay there; ie "On My Mac".

Would that suit you?

I do what Ian above does, in Mail (the app) you can Right Click on any or multiple emails (once selected ie highlighted) and choose Move To or Copy To then select any Folders "On My Mac" that you have created as per Ian's instructions above in the Menu that appears. I have an Online Receipts folder, Software Registration folder, Bookings Confirmation folder etc. Its a really handy way of filing important information and for added safety you may also choose to save to iCloud.

Great tip guys I've been going nuts keeping up with mail I want to save. The only problem I have when trying to delete folders I get this error message.



If I delete mail from archive does it remove that email from other folders?

The mailboxes are not in the Cloud. However, they are not under "On My Mac." They are under a sub-head that is the name of the earthlink address. This is the problem, right?

I believe you have to be using Mail App on your mac to see them under "On My Mac", that's how it seems to work for me and it opens my gmail and I see the new folders under "On My Mac". Hope this helps.

I guess I'm a bit old fashioned when it comes to mail. I like to keep one account as POP3 and another as IMAP. The POP3 account does not remove mail from your Mac even if you delete them from the server whereas IMAP will.

POP3 is not recommended if you have many devices in use such as iPads, iPhones, that you also use for mail. Otherwise you would have to move, archive, delete, etc, for each device.

On your Mac > Mail > Mailbox > New Mailbox > opens window as in my post #4 > choose "On My Mac", then name each Mailbox according to your needs.

They could be, Family, Friends, Business "A", Business "B", Articles of Interest, anything you want.

Move your emails to the appropriate Mailbox and they will remain there irrespective of whether you delete them from your Web Mail account.

All of my Mailboxes are stored on the mail providers servers, so they are all always accessible whichever device I use.
