this is the first time in 12 years of updating OSX that I've encountered an issue.

I always update my MBP first before my main iMac, and after downloading the update the installation froze completely, requiring a restart. I then downloaded and installed the combo update with no problem at all. I'm now updating my iMac, but with the combo update as well - don't want to risk another freeze especially on the machine that connects to all my important stuff.

Just one query with the combo update though, when I downloaded it, it was around 2.5GB. But the installation wizard said it would take up around 8.5GB of hard disc space.

Incomplete? Usually I wait a little while after these things come out to update but if you have a good stable connection it “shouldn’t” happen. Glad you worked it out.

I believe the combo updates are compressed or zipped. Installation expands them.

I own only one Mac (iMac late 2012) that will run Mojave. Just updated and all works great.

The Mac COMBO Updates are often available in two forms, one much smaller than the other, but I believe both are fairly well compressed as Charlie mentioned above, and just as the regular macOS updates are also compressed.

It helps speed up the download process and keeps the data integrated better to get through all the internet servers.

Currently updating myself at the moment. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s not a good idea to watch the process. Just to reassure people, despite the fact that we are informed the device may restart more than once as a part of the installation process it doesn’t prepare us for the actual sequence of events. My 2015 MBPr restarted 6 times. At no point did the progress bar complete it’s travel to the right hand end and once it shut down while still saying “Estimating time remaining.” Sometimes the keyboard lights go off sometimes they don’t. It’s all a bit distressing really. So my advice is, give it about an hour to complete and don’t touch it. It will work (usually) or it won’t, either way so long as you have a bootable clone there isn’t too much to worry about and after all once the process has begun it’s all out of your control,

Great point, Rod. I too have forced myself to leave the room Wien there’s an update. Too stressful to stay and watch :)

PS Interesting new avatar.

Ian, I usually torture myself and watch the whole thing install! I was that way back in School and it made the last class seem like it would never end. I always watched the clock. Bad thing to do! :D Grin

And I see that you updated your avatar a day or so ago as well.

Didn't know if we are supposed to comment again or each time you do so or not.

But good comments about the OS install, I can't believe that some carry on working on some high-end project while they do an OS system install!!! But it should get the credit for the fact that it can accomplish (sometimes) the install under such circumstances. I would never push it that way.

PS Interesting new avatar.

Although misnamed in the range of avatars (its actually Adam Jensen the prime character in Deus EX : Human Revolution) now available in this forums' user preferences I couldn't resist it and there is a strong resemblance don't you think?

Patrick, somebody posted there were a new range of animated gif avatars so I thought I'd have a look. I had removed the one with my granddaughter because of privacy considerations but when I saw the hero from what was one of the best FPS games on macOS I couldn't resist.
