Entirely my fault, but any help getting me out of this will be appreciated.

Had an Apple ID for years, no problem.Call it my Original ID.

Bought an iPad, and for no good reason set up a new ID. My New ID.

OK for a good while, until I wanted to start using iCloud to see docs on both Mac Mini and iPad.

Now of course I need to have the same ID on both.

Tried backing up/wiping the iPad, setting it up as a new device using my Original ID. Fine, linked to i.cloud. Then restored myiPad. Trouble was, of course, it restored my New ID, and thus cut off iCloud link.

As I said, all my own silly fault.

But is there a solution?

Ta.

Your iCloud information is in the backup up info, so restoring it brings you back whatever Apple ID/apps/configuration you backed up. However, once finished, you can go into Settings, uncheck all the iCloud backup and then sign out of New ID. Now log into the Original ID and re-enable all the iCloud backup/links and things should be in sync.

Just tried that, but when I put in my Original ID it wouldn’t have it, saying that email was already in use by another Apple ID (which it is - me!)

Or am I pressing the wrong buttons?

You are likely trying to create a new Apple ID (using the Original ID info) as opposed to logging into an existing one.

Not sure how else to do it as I want to end up with the SAME (Original) ID on both devices...

Apple asks for a ‘new’ email, but if I put in a totally new one, I’ll be back at square one, i.e. having 2 different Apple IDs. Or am I missing something?

Assuming you are running a recent enough of iOS (I'm using my iPhone XS as reference), you click on Settings and you should see your Name on top in the left. Click on that, then on the bottom should be Sign Out assuming you are signed in. Then, you should have the ability to change the username and put in a password if I'm remembering correctly.

If this isn't the case, perhaps you can take a screenshot and share so that we can better guide you.

Ashwin, I owe you!

I’d never seen that ‘sign out’ button, and having pressed it, all fell into place.

Not sure what, but if ever you need anything, please ask.

Thanks again.

In the meantime, Allen; how about giving Ashwin the Thumbs Up and adding to his reputation. The beer can wait:)

Hey Ashwin, I hope Alan takes you up on your offer, but just in case you didn't know and a bit of a warning, most Brits tend to like their beer dark, hoppy and at room temperature or warmer!!!

But I don't know if what they called Central Heating has improved from what it was some many years ago, but back in those days, the average was in the mid-sixties or below and was considered a normal temperature. :Smirk:

I prefer to enjoy my Canadian type beer lighter and served colder just in case anybody was interested. ;-)

I’ll certainly and willingly add to Ashwin’s thumbs-ups...

As regards British drinking habits, I used to know a lot, but since I’ve been teetotal for 17 years I’m out of touch!

Thanks for this forum - a lifesaver.

@Patrick,

Most "beers" in the UK are now served chilled and from what I see, lager is more popular than the old traditional "ales".

In many areas, wine has overtaken beer as the drink of preference.

Houses are now "overheated" according to health experts, who also note that the rise in home temperature has correlated with a rise in chest infections and a decline in our immunity in general. I make no comment on that.

Every modern home has central heating. What we lack, despite being in a temperate climate, is AirCon. Most cars have it by default, but as far as I know, houses are never built with AirCon & I've never been in one that had it.

AirCon is a must here in Texas, both in the home and auto. I can remember one evening when I was at work my wife called to say that the AirCon unit went out. I must have called around for an hour before I found a repair service that would come late in the evening to do the repairs. Expensive repair but it was well worth it. It was in the middle of Summer where the average temperature in our area is usually around 95ºF with high humidity.

Hmmm... It seems our living conditions here aren't too bad at all considering what some seem to go through.

Even though we live in a temperate climate, we installed AC when we built 20 years ago, mainly for its heat pump capacities, we have needed and used the cooling side of it maybe a dozen times during some heat spells. But it is fairly expensive to run even with our moderate electrical costs that just seem to keep going up and up and up. Just like so many other things.

The latest being regular gas prices that have shot up recently averaging $1.62cdn+/liter wich is close to $6.50+usd/us gallon if I did the math correctly!! That hurts!!!

My maths aren't that good either, but using Mr Calculator, a gallon of petrol in the UK is equivalent to $7.20 USD.

Prices for gasoline dropped a bit this week, currently at $2.55/Gallon. (Texas prices) And my usual Summer electricity bill (running the AirCon 24/7 set to 78ºF) averages around $150.00/month. That's with a new low energy unit we recently had installed.

I am currently visiting UK, can confirm that petrol is about £1.33/liter, which works out to be $6.55/gallon at current exchange rates. And ale is room temperature, which is lovely. I don't drink lager. As for AirCon, my rental car has it, the rental property in London did not, nor did the rental property we had in Dorset. Hotels usually do have AirCon. But the temps are such that it is not needed. Today, for example, the high temp is predicted for 11C, or about 50F.

Hope you're enjoying your visit, Jake. I know you've been here several times before.

You wait till summer really kicks in. In the South East (Greater London area) temps can easily hit the high seventies or early eighties Fahrenheit and it can be very humid. Indeed, for much of the UK, a modest summer day with humidity can be extremely uncomfortable.

I lived in Manchester for 29 years and the summers - usually rainy, moderately hot but very humid, made sleeping at night very uncomfortable.

I'm also impressed that you are getting your petrol at reasonable rates (for us). Here it is the equivalent of just over $7/gallon equivalent.

Enjoy.

This is an interesting thread ... relating to a problem experienced by thousands of happy Apple users: look at all the people who changed their eMail address and then found out they can't access their iCloud anymore. By that I mean, they have changed their Apple id on their phone and other Mac devices. All devices that were able to accept the "new" Apple id, will show up in the "Settings" file on the iPhone, when they click their name. Those devices can be located with the "Find My Phone" app .. and can also be locked and erased if necessary.

Now, If you have an older Mac which was using an older Apple id ... you will not be able to change the id without clicking on "iCloud" in System Preferences, and clicking on "Sign Out" ... which will disconnect the Mac from the iCloud, and delete all info stored on the cloud, AND also delete all info on your Mac that was stored on the iCloud.

When you re-launch your Mac, and click on "iCloud" in System preferences, you will be able to enter the new Apple id & Password in the iCloud log-in window, and your mac will join your other devices in the cloud and show up on your phone in "settings" when you click on your name.

But then, it may be missing a few things... perhaps your other iCloud devices can put them back?
