Mojave 10.14.4 still running old Ruby version. Is an update due I wonder.

I'm wondering if anyone knows how long it takes Apple to catch up on updates to software like Ruby. The installed version is 2.3, but the latet - out for some time - is 2.4
I have software that needs Version 2.4, and it won't run on 2.3

I'm reluctant to install it via Homebrew because of potential clashes?

It might be a long time before MacOS will update the Ruby version. You are better of updating to the latest version through Homebrew and managing the use of it with rbenv.

I never realized what Ruby was actually for or why it would have been installed on my Mac.

I just used Find Any File.app (FAF) to search for anything containing 'Ruby' on my Mavericks volume and it shows several hundred files and folders, and I assume I can just delete them all to save drive space and surplus installed stuff I'll never need or probably never use.

It looks like there are some other similar surplus software installed stuff the Mac OS Installer installed as well that really is surplus to my needs. I assume most of it can be Trashed as well.

Gheese, and to think I had been running what I thought was a fairly clean volume, and void of most surplus stuff on my boot volume.

Thanks, so if I don't use or plan to use either, I assume all files and folders of either one can be trashed????

I doubt that the operating system relies on anything related to them, and is there any way to find out what applications might be using them?

Deleting the Ruby files will likely yield you about 7MB of storage, so it really isn't worth it. While you may not use it, I'm not sure what within the OS is or might use it. Traditionally, files that use Ruby have the .rb ending on them.

Thanks Ashwin, and I would tend to agree if the savings would only be 7 or so megabytes. At first glance of all the stuff that Find Any File.app found on my volume, it appeared that it would have been a lot more than that.
