Hi Guys --

I received a noticed today for an update to Java -- an automatic notification to update to the latest version (I think build 12 or something.) But I clicked on the wrong button(s) and instead deleted the update. I still have Java when I go into the terminal app and enter java -version. But I noticed that there is no java in System preferences for me to set the update options.

can anyone help me out here, or am I missing something? I could have sworn that option was there before. And can anyone tell me how to download and install the latest update?

I'm running el capitan 10.11.6

If you think you need Java, go to java.com and download the lastest version and install it. The Java notice will examine your Mac and if it sees that you have not used Java for awhile, it will automatically remove it from your system. So be sure you really need Java.

In addition any notification you receive to update Java is suspect in my mind. Classic phishing stuff. If you feel you need it follow chscag's advice above.

... can anyone tell me how to download and install the latest update?

Apple no longer provides recent versions of Java for the Macintosh, Oracle does. The latest version, recently released, is version 12.
A "runtime version" is no longer available, so you have to download and install a "developer kit" version:

Java SE Development Kit 12- - Downloads

Folks downloading and installing earlier versions of Java have been reporting that they don't work anymore. (Apple pushed out an "update" rendering them inoperable for security reasons.)

I'm running el capitan 10.11.6

I have no idea if the latest version of Java will run on a version of the Mac OS that old. You will have to contact Oracle and ask.

FWIW: the latest Version still works with Mavericks 10.9.5 and Safari 9.1.3:

Congratulations!
You have the recommended Java installed (Version 8 Update 211).

BTW: The auto-updater and installer would not work on my iMac, but downloading the update installer file and running it did.
