    Welcome to our Forums.

We shall need a tad more information before we can help you.

    Sorry for the questions:

Mac model (Notebook, Desktop), Year and Operating System (OS)?

Was everything working perfectly before you shut down? Or any minor or major hassles - beachballs, slowness etc?

Definitely could use more info as Ian mentioned.

    - Some users are not always aware of what the lastest OS version is...thus the "latest OS version" on this computer may or may not be the latest version.
    - If this is an older computer with a "spinner HD"...the HD could be failing.
    - Maybe the OS got corrupted in some way...and needs some repair or maintenance performed.

Restart again and hold down "option". You will want to run Disk Utility, if you are able to select a startup disk.

Reboot the computer & press the 2-key combo...command + r. This will boot the computer into the Recovery Partition. If this is successful...then as member Ferrarr mentioned...run Disk Utility & try repairing the disk.

Also as asked for above...could use exactly what model computer you have...which may help us help determine what may be the issue.

    Thanks,

I have the 27" iMac desktop . What is happening is, I press the restart button on the back of the mac, the computer starts the bootup with the apple logo with a small white spinning disc with a bar below. The if greyed out and then a black bar moves along, but stops half way and the disc stops spinning. Hope this helps

And just to be clear, the pressing of the Option button, or CMD+R keys, needs to be held down until the system is booted, not just tapped.

Try these other key combinations, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904.

Are you using a wired, or wireless keyboard?

Good to know...and a good start.

There have been about 27 different 27" iMac's since 2009...that's why the term "exactly what model" was used above. Not all 27 of these can run Mojave...but many of them can. And that's why we need to know EXACTLY what model 27" iMac this is...which may help us figure things out.

I know this may sound silly but try unplugging the device from its power source (the wall socket). Leave for at least 5min the plug back in and try again.
Hold down the CMD and R buttons initially and until you see the Restore partition window.
I used to be conceited but now I'm perfect.
