What is the Partition scheme, and also, what is the format type?

When you open DU, select the device being partitioned.

    Not the partition.

Then select Partition in the toolbar.

This is where you add partitions, by clicking on the plus (+) button.

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

You could have changed the partitions scheme in DU also. But, I'm glad you sorted it out.

As Bob says above, Disk Utility should have allowed you to do that:
    See example here:

    Next time...
