My Macbook doesn't recognize Toshiba Stor.e Canvio HD

Hello there!

I've had a Toshiba Stor.e Canvio external HD for years and it's always worked perfectly until a few days ago, when all of a sudden neither my Macbook Pro nor my iMac recognize it. On the other hand, when plugged to the smart tv it works fine, all the contents are there, etc.

Any idea of what might happen here?

Thanks!

A warm welcome to Mac-Forums, RamonSole.

When you say it is not recognised, does that apply to Disk Utility (DU) as well?

If you can see it in DU, then you can run First Aid or its equivalent in whatever Operating System (OS) your Macs are running - to check out the HD.

If you can't see it in DU, then despite its working on your smart TV, it could be a failing HD; especially as you say you have had it for years. And that could also explain why it stopped working "all of a sudden". And explain why it does not work on both your Macs.

So questions: can you see it in DU on either Mac, and which OS do your Macs run.

And are you using the same cable you use with the Macs and the TV???

If not, you could have a goofy cable.

Is it only on this particular MAC this HD is not recognised? Have you tried connecting to other laptops to see whether it's an issue with your mac or the HD itself?

Have you tried restarting either of your Macs, with the drive connected? Disconnected?

Is this Toshiba a full sized 3.5" drive? I just had an almost brand new Toshiba Canvio 2.5" portable USB3 drive die. It worked fine for a couple of months then I thought I heard a clicking then nothing. At first it showed in Disk Utility then stopped even showing up there.

I have had nothing but issues with the 2.5" notebook Toshiba drives over the years. Just curious but since it does read on the Smart TV, Not sure what is up.

I agree with what others have said, try a different USB cable if you have not done that as yet.

I've also have a Toshiba Canvio 2.5" USB 3 drive. It works but is very slow compared to other USB 3 drives, so I just use it for misc storage. From now on, I only buy portable SSDs. Yes, they are more expensive but if you shop around you can come up with some pretty good deals. As an example, I was able to buy a Samsung T5 SSD from B&H Photo in NY for only $99.00 when they were on sale.

Mine before it died seemed quite slow also. A friend who I just did some computer work for bought me a 1TB WD 2.5" USB 3 drive and it's way faster and works great. Was in the low $50 range. I remember when 1TB anything was $$$$! :D

In finder-> preferences, is your "hard disks" and "external hard disks" ticked on both the "General" tab and the "Sidebar" tab?

Hello Rocky97!
Yes, I have. And none of them recognizes it! :-(

Still, it appears in my Macbook Disk Utility. Any idea of how to proceed from here?
Thanks!

Right!

If you can see it in Disk Utility (DU), single-click on the Drive to highlight it.

Now look to your right, top row, and you will see "First Aid". Click on that, follow instructions and let it rum. It will "test" the Drive for all sorts of errors or faults and attempt to repair them.

When it is finished, it will tell you "mission accomplished" (my words - but it will say all errors sorted or none found; you get the point). Or, it will tell you that the Drive is "faulty" and cannot be repaired. It may also advise you to copy contents to another Drive ASAP.

Please report back.

BTW: does that external drive have the white/blue light as mentioned here???:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4107705

Do you have a Y-USB cable you can try or use a different port(s) as some MacBook models fail to provide adequate power from some single USB ports. And I don't know when of if they ever fixed the problem with the USB ports.

Hi there Ian! And Happy Christmas BTW!!

I've followed your instructions and, according to the "First Aid" analysis, everything works fine. No messages apart from "no problems found".
What do I do from here?

Thanks again for your help

I'm sorry Ian, I'm afraid I got it wrong. I did it again and there's some kind of error. As you said, First Aid advises me to copy contents to another drive.

This is the full message:

Sorry for the delay in posting back, RamonSole. Been doing my festive duties!

Well, I think this pretty well confirms that the Drive has died.

The fact that you can see it in Disk Utility (DU) is promising in one way: it suggests the possibility of data retrieval by third parties.

A great deal depends on (a) how absolutely vital that data is to you and (b) the budget you are prepared to outlay to get the data.

Data Rescue 5 is one of a few well respected apps that you can download from the web. There is a free trial version which will tell you there is anything there it can recover. If there is, you have to buy the app. https://www.prosofteng.com/mac-data-recovery/

If that fails, then there are professional data recovery companies; but they are very, very expensive.

I'm sorry I can't be more positive or helpful.

Another alternative(s) to try in case the electronics of the enclosure itself have gone goofy or kaput would be to try either the simple bare drive adapter or Drive Dock, the latter being much easier and the same price while it's on sale:

NewerTech Voyager S3 Drive Dock

Hello Ian! It looks like my HD is broken and I'll have to somehow recover the files, either through a pay app or a company. :p

You've been very kind. Thanks a lot for your help and have a great 2019!!
