Activity monitor process 'openvpn-service'

I've recently found that I've got 'openvpn-service' running constantly on my activity monitor. I vaguely remember installing and then uninstalling openvpn a few years ago, so it's a bit strange to find that process running. (Searching for openvpn in finder doesn't yield any results, so I'm assuming it really is deleted...)

Quitting and Force Quitting doesn't seem to do anything. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can stop that process?

Welcome to Mac-Forums.

Click on openvpn-service in Activity Monitor and then click on the (i) icon and then click on the Open Files and Ports tab and the first couple of entries there should be the location of the service. Go to that folder within Finder and you can delete the files.

Also check the Login Items under your Accounts in System Preferences to ensure that openvpn isn't a service that is starting up on each boot.

When I click on the (i) icon for openvpn-service there's no Open Files and Ports tab, only the Memory and Statistics tabs are there.

In my Login Items though I noticed an item called Privatetunnel Tray (maybe this was the vpn I installed?). Removing it from my Login Items didn't appear to do anything though, openvpn-service is still running in my Activity Monitor.

What version of OS X/macOS are you running? Removing the entry from the Login Items just prevents it from starting up the next time, it doesn't do anything about currently running processes. Now that you've removed it, go ahead and reboot the machine and check in Activity Monitor if the openvpn process is gone. If so, you've got your answer and now can go try to find Privatetunnel Tray in /Applications or elsewhere and try to remove it.

I'm on High Sierra 10.13.6, it's a 2011 iMac so it can't run Mojave.

It's still there even after rebooting it unfortunately

This type of technical stuff isn't my strong suit, so I'm worried it might be doing something nefarious in the background

Ashwin,

Do you think there would be any mileage in downloading and running Find Any File app in order to seek out any remnants of openVPN which may have been left behind - assuming it was installed/uninstalled?

Ian, yeah that was going to be next suggestion. Since it is indeed installed somewhere and running.

Ahhh... so glad some are taking up my cause and now also suggesting and recommending using Find Any File.app (FAF) that I got teased about so much. But heck, it works eh!!! :Blushing:

And just in case:
Thomas Tempelmann - Find Any File

And no, I don't have any connections with the developer. ;D

I think it's about time you did, Patrick. Some pension enhancement wouldn't come amiss:Mischievous::D:Cool:

Only joking, of course.

Thanks for your help guys, I found the problematic file hidden away somewhere; deleting it got rid of the process

OK, I will admit that I have conversed with the developer several times over the years. And even helped a tiny bit with a beta release many years ago.
I've also been using it since Mac's PPC System days starting around 2008 I believe. And I've even donated several times, especially when it has performed with honours and "saved my fanny".
