Remove the current memory installed and try just the Kingston memory. If that works, then you have a memory incompatibility between the original Apple memory and the Kingstons. If the machine doesn't work with the Kingston memory, then you have busted Kingston memory and should get a replacement/refund.

My quick searches for this memory and iMac seemed to indicate that it should work but there were a couple of mentions of potential issues when paired with the Apple Memory. Just for reference, my 2009 iMac came with 8GB of Apple memory and I added 8 more gigs of Crucial memory and that's been working great for the past 8 odds years of my ownership.

In general, Crucial and OWC seem to make memory that works well with the existing Apple memory. I can't vouch for the other brands.

Good deal. So if you wanted to go back to 16GB or more, you'll want to get another pair of Kingston memory which would do the trick. Too bad, you can't use the existing Apple Memory though.

When I upgraded my iMac from 8GB to 16GB, if I remember correctly (not at that computer right now), I ordered the 16GB upgrade from OWC (2 8GB chips), removed the original Apple chips and installed just the OWC chips. However, I also could not get the iMac to boot after I installed the RAM. And I had even thoroughly dusted the slots with compressed air before installation. But after removing the chips, blasting some more air, and reinstalling them, it worked. So you may want to try something like that just to be sure it's not a dust or seating issue before moving further.

Even without any compressed gas, just installing/removing/installing several times will help clean the contacts.

As for using Kingston RAM, I'll just say it sure wouldn't be my first choice and is usually overpriced and overrated.

I agree with Ashwin. I've mixed OWC and Crucial memory with Apple memory in all of my Macs that I have owned and never once had a problem. I used to buy off brand memory when I owned PCs and generally never had a problem with it. But PCs are more forgiving than Macs. :)
