I'm getting a popup from Time Machine "Disk Not Ejected Properly" when Computer comes out of "Sleep Mode". Sometimes the Time Machine icon is on the desktop when this popup appears and sometimes not. When the icon is there with the popup, Time Machine is still working. When there isn't a Time Machine icon with the popup, I have to unplug then plug in Time Machine to start working again. This only happens once to a few times a month. I've seen it with High Sierra and now with Mojave 10.14.2. Any fix on this or is this a bug?

Sounds like the drive is going to sleep, spinning down when it isn't used often enough. WD drives do that a lot. There is a program called Amphetamine that will keep the drives awake by "tickling" them every few minutes. Mine stopped giving that error when I put it in place.

BTW: OS X has a little known builtin "don't sleep" Terminal command or did have if Apple hasn't removed it, but as suggested, Amphetamine, InsomniaX or Caffeine (all Free) may be easier or have more control.

Quick Tip: How to Stop Your Mac From Sleeping Using the Command Line

PS:I'm not sure that it or any of the "Keep awake Apps" override any external drives that tend to go to sleep due to their own builtin software.

The challenge, Patrick, is that those commands keep the Mac from sleeping, but the drives have, in some cases, their own sleep routines so that if they don't get accessed, they sleep. Amphetamine triggers them to reset that countdown clock, hence, not sleeping.

Sort of like the old "Keep Awake" type extension (whatever its real name(s) were, or some of the scripts that were around some years ago that would just keep pinging the drive volume to keep it awake and spinning. Also similar to to the network LAN extension.

Yep. I think my SMART monitor also triggers the drives as it checks the health every few minutes. The drive makers and OS developers really ought to talk--a sleeping drive has not been disconnected, it's just asleep. Similarly, if the drive thinks it's time to sleep, there ought to be a way to ping the OS to see if it's really safe to do that. You'd think in the 21st century people would communicate...

Such wishful thinking Jake, but there would have to be some new "STANDARD" in order for that to happen.

But your suggestion sure does remind me of the Monty Python Dead Parrot routine!!! ;D
