Hey. Hope you're having a great day. This is something I still couldn't figure out since HighSierra.

Basically the text-selection and typing-over-it behaves differently at various times as you can see in the linked video. I don't recall accidentally changing any text settings tho. No idea what's causing this. Please help me out.

Is it the same character that is 'stuck'? Which app does this happen with?

I'm running the latest version of High Sierra on my MBP and playing around with this in different apps doesn't seem to show this problem. I've tried Spotlight, TextEdit, Chrome, Terminal and in all cases the entire highlighted section is replaced with whatever I type without issues.

Simple things first - have you tried a reboot?

Could be that your keyboard is compromised somehow - swollen battery, perhaps - or the trackpad is faulty. I seem to remember a similar problem and my trackpad was replaced (within guarantee).

I agree with Sue on rebooting first. I just did a Google search, and on a thread where someone was experiencing a similar issue, someone suggested that changing their keyboard layout to U.S. International fixed the issue for them.

System Preferences > Keyboard > Input Sources > + (add) > (find U.S. International - PC under the English keyboards)

Might be worth a shot.

For me it's not a persistent issue at all. But drives me crazy when it does.

My laptop is just 2 years old. The keyboard is perfectly fine. I even had to replace the keyboard under warranty due to an other issue.

Have tried rebooting many times. For now I have changed the Keyboard layout as you mentioned...Hope it fixes it. By the way, could you link the webpage where you found this potential fix? Thanks

Sorry, I tried googling it again and can't find it again. I'm pretty sure it was on the Apple discussion forum.
