I have a mini, and never use sleep. I have "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" checked and "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" unchecked.

I used to do the same with my iMac and then discovered that regardless of the settings, some hard drives will still spin down on their own accord regardless, but usually after a prolonged delay with no usage.

Touching wood here, but I have never really had any problem with my Mac's wake up, except now, more often than not, only a press on the Space Bar works when pressing on any key or moving the mouse would always wake things up. Not always guaranteed lately, and that's even with using old Mavericks.

@macgig
I would definitely do a SMC reset with that iMac of yours. Then just do a quick check on your System Preferences Pref Panes like Date and Time and Start Up Disk etc. They often get reset to some default setting.

@Ian

Ian, just to be clear, do you have Energy Saver set to "Never" for your drive, and 15 minutes for your display?

Correct. But in later iterations of macOS, the nomenclature has changed. This is how I have Energy Saver set:

spoke too soon. doing it again. it let me long in this time with the password, then everything locks up (keyboard and mouse does nothing) and I get this screen. have to power off to get the keyboard and mouse working again. never an issue with Sierra, only High Sierra. :( I hate bluetooth im ready to get a wired keyboard and mouse.

just found this on the apple discussions. hopefully this will fix it?

Hold down Option & Shift while clicking on the Bluetooth icon to the left of the clock on the right side of menu bar, select DEBUG and then RESET THE BLUETOOTH MODULE.

Hopefully that will fix the problem for you — let us know...

Those BT errors and other nuances are the main reason I stick to my old wired Apple extended keyboard and Logitech wireless USB/dongle mouse.

Thanks for that, I will put that in my notebook for fixes, too.
