I like sierra better because I could tap my keyboard delete key to bring up the login screen after a sleep. this is not working so well with high sierra, I often have to shut down then restart using the power button to get the keyboard and mouse to work again. the keyboard and mouse are not able to be used to wake from sleep often. (worked fine on sierra).

is it possible to downgrade back to sierra? how? thanks.

You can wake your machine from sleep using any key or trackpad. This should work fine in High Sierra or any OS. I have a MBP with TouchBar and since I use the finger unlock and the delete button is right beneath it, I hit delete and use the my finger to unlock. I'm on High Sierra and this works every single time.

If your machine doesn't wake up, that's a different story and one you should address.

Have you tried other keys to see if it wakes up? If the machine doesn't wake up when going to sleep, some app might be crashing or causing an issue.

Agree with Ashwin. I used HS for a long time and now am on Mojave. A keypress of any key wakes the machine quickly. Something is wrong in your setup somehow if it's not working for you.

i zapped the pram and it helped for a day or two. now its being stubborn again. this was a non issue with sierra. waking from sleep with a press of the delete key was fast, worked every time.

It seems to me that the Mac "Wake from Sleep" problem has been around for sometime now and affected various Mac models as well as various OS X Versions, from various forums with no definitive solution.

It also seems for many who did revert back to an older OS X version, it didn't always solve the problem. A Very frustrating situation!!!

I would have thought that Bob's suggestion to do a NVRAM AND SMC Reset should have solved the problemAnd I would suggest trying them at least another time if not twice or more. And also do a shutdown then reboot after each one.

Using Safe Boot Mode may be an idea as well, just to test in case there's some third party software involved.

EDIT:
What Mac?
seems it should be:
2015 Retina 4k iMac. High Sierra. 8GB Ram

But I'll bet it's probably using a %^$# wireless keyboard. :Mischievous:

Which makes me ask, is there a wired keyboard available to use to test or just use???

I zapped the pram again. it's good for now. but last time that did not help for long. when it wakes from sleep the wireless mouse and keyboard wont respond. have to power it down with the power button then reboot to be able to log in. worked fine with sierra so beats me. I'll keep an eye on it and trouble shoot more I guess.

I'm on a 2009 iMac with High Sierra. I have a wired Matias keyboard and wireless trackpad. I always wake it up by clicking on the trackpad and it wakes up within a second or so and is ready for use. The only wait I have is the 5 or so seconds it takes to reconnect to the WiFi.

And I'll bet that having and using a WIRED keyboard makes all the difference and I'll bet you've never had any "wake from sleep" problems when using it.

BTY: Those Matias keyboards are nice and really great, especially for good typists which I am NOT!!!!

As I mentioned, I always click on the wireless trackpad to wake up the iMac not the keyboard, even though its wired.

What about if you shut the keyboard or mouse off, then turn it back on?

Also, are you also doing the SMC reset?

Another thing you can test is to set up a new user account, and see if it affects that account as well?

turning mouse and keyboard off never helped, the mac would not see them while trying to awake from sleep. I have not done the SMC reset yet. good idea with the user account I will try that. honestly the only reason I have a wireless mouse/keyboard is because that is what came with the mac. I live in an apartment and I hate having bluetooth on all the time. I don't trust bluetooth one bit. I have thought many times about buying a wired keyboard and mouse so I can disable bluetooth.

You may or may not like this "solution", but I have an iMac similar in age and broadly similar in specs. I rarely use sleep mode or shut down completely.

I run my iMac 24/7 with "Turn display off after 15 minutes".

Although my Internal HD is now an SSD, i did the same when I had a spinning platter HDD. I presume your Internal HD is spinning platter?? Either way, no harm in letting things run 24/7; just turn off display.

It takes courage at first because it intuitively implies that the Drive will give out sooner; but in fact, this is not the case.

Spinning up your Drive from rest (asleep or off entirely) stresses the Drive with each power surge.

And remember companies like Backblaze leave their spinning HDs on 24/7 for many months, or even years, at a time - in fact provide quarterly statistics on the failure rate of their Drives.

So no harm doing this - arguably better for Drive longevity.

I've rarely had a problem with wake from sleep and bluetooth keyboards and mice. I bouht by first wireless keyboard shortly after the wireless keyboard came out. The only time I have had problems is with some of the cheapter third-party keyboards. As the batteries got low some are slow to wake up themselves and thus slow to wake the Mac.

Does the keyboard drop its bluetooth connection often or is that staying intact? My first Apple keyboard started acting up (dropped connections, difficulty repairing, failure to wake up) after having been dropped onnto a hard floor numerous times over the years.

One of the problems when trying to solve the Mac wake-up problem is determining whether the Mac was actually sleeping or maybe even Off, or is it the display just not coming back on. The effect appears to be the same, but the cause could be different.

And even though the wireless keyboards are often blamed, the same problem also exists with a lot of the portable Mac models with their built-in keyboards.

So is the Mac actually just still sleeping or is the display just not turning on???

I have a mini, and never use sleep. I have "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" checked and "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" unchecked.

Ian, just to be clear, do you have Energy Saver set to "Never" for your drive, and 15 minutes for your display?
