Have several files of images that will not open on external hard drives and on the desk top . (Yes, we have been doing a tidy up ) nothing happens then a Code 43 appears , Have carried out the procedure of cmd,R and P +alt x 3 times with no joy. Other images produce a flag " It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognise." Have also looked at photo recovery apps and many reviews state they do not work, not good for confidence.
Could some one advise me on this issue please. Many thanks My externals are Lacie's and computer is 10. 11. 6

Hi DEC - welcome to the forum! :) Can you view the image extensions on your files, e.g. JPEG, PNG, TIFF or other? Also, take a look at this article on Code 43, which mentions that El Capitan is more susceptible and a lot of suggestions as to the cause and potential correction. Dave

What about if you copy the files (folder?) to the internal drive? Will they open that way?

Many thanks for your reply. Have moved them to the computers hard drive and still will not open still get this message "It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognise."
I would suspect as some one else has mentioned this is a spin off of ElCaptain system. Have been thinking of upgrading but then the last time one upgraded the system I lost photo shop and a few others, but maybe this is another option.
Many thanks DEC

Many thanks for this, will take a look and digest code 43. It maybe beneficial to upgrade the system. The last time one upgraded I lost several programs including photoshop which I was very unhappy about, Now have lightroom instead.
Many thanks for your reply. Cheers DEC

On your Mac's Internal HD: if you select an Image; then Right Click on it; the dialogue has Open, underneath which is Open With. Choose "Open With" and see if any of the options offered will allow you to view it.

Have you run Disk Utility > First Aid, on the external drive? I also hope you have a backup, for that external and all external drive that have mission critical files on it.
