I just bought my wife a new iPhone Xs and I backed up her iPhone to iTunes on our iMac. My question is Upgrading from Yosemite 10.10.5 to macOS Mojave will it delete her backup that I did to iTunes?

It has all of our children's photos from birth till this date. I can guarantee you that my wife would divorce me if I upgraded and it deleted the iTunes backup's. It requires the upgrade or it won't let me restore her iPhone Xs from the iTunes backup of her iPhone 7.

Any help would be much appreciated as I'm stuck...

I would suggest that you backup to iCloud instead of iTunes. That will ensure that your backup is safe and sound. If you didn't do that before you got rid of the old phone, know that when you upgrade from one OS to another, your data is always intact.

You should make a full backup of your machine, especially a bootable one with CCC or something.

@Raz0rEdge

I just bought a time machine and can back the iMac up first. My wife never backed up her iPhone for 2 years even with me advising her how important it was. I tried to do a backup to iCould a few nights but considering she had 28,000 photos it was going to take 20 hours due to our bandwidth.

But... are you stating that if I didn't back up the iMac that the files should be intact with the upgraded OS? and Thank you for the response.

Yes, upgrading the OS leaves everything (your apps, photos, documents, data) intact while just the OS is upgraded. You will also get a new version of iTunes that is compatible with the iPhone XS. But I would do the Time Machine backup for your sanity to ensure that your stuff is intact.

The files should be intact after the upgrade but things can go wrong. Here's what I would do if I were you:
1. Sync your wife's phone and make sure that iTunes and let it make a backup of the phone.
2. Back up the Mac using either a Time Machine backup, clone of the drive, or both.
3. Once you are sure you have a good backup of the Mac it's safe to peerform the upgrade.

BTW I highly recommend a little program called iMazing for doing thing like backing up the iPhone/saving its data. It's not cheap but it's cheaper than a trip to divorce court. :) You can often find that program cheaper as part of a software bundle. In fact, I think it is part of a Bundlehut package at the moment.

I took advice from a moderator a while ago and installed CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). I am glad I did 'cos the latest OS Mojave proved to be incompatible with my old version of Virtual Box. I use VB with Windows XP to drive my old Fujitsu scanner but the latest VB disables the MacMouse on my iMac. I have restored High Sierra and it is mostly back to normal.
