After newest Mojave update, Preview and System Preferences won't close

A few days ago I updated to Mojave with no noticeable problems. Yesterday the latest fix got installed and today, Preview and System Preferences opened and now won't close. They are in the bottom in the dock area, to the right of the vertical line ending the dock and to the left of Trash. Sorry, don't remember what that area is called. Rebooting doesn't help. Is this some new feature of Mojave? Thanks.

Minimized window of an application can be configured (in Dock settings) to either go to the right (next to the trash can) on the Dock or to be minimized back into the icon of the application on the left. I prefer the latter method, but then I seldom minimize any windows.

If you click on the icon on the right side, the window should be restored. You can then close that window with a CMD+w or quit the application with CMD+q. You can also just right click on either the Preview or System Preferences icon on the left and choose Quit from the menu to close the application or choose the window to make it appear and then close that individually.

OK, I got it figured out. No need for any responses. Go to the Apple Menu, System Preferences, Dock, and deselect Show Recent Applications in Dock.

Well, since others may not know this 'new' feature of Mojave, i.e. 'Show Recent Applications in Dock' (a feature borrowed from recent iOS versions) - the screen capture below (LINK) shows a new vertical bar when this choice is selected, thus creating a 'middle' area in the Dock - simple to uncheck in System Preferences -> Dock, as you've already solved - the link provides much more information for those interested. P.S. I have the feature 'off' in both Mojave and on my iPad.

Ahh, a new Mojave feature that is quite dumb. If I'm frequently using an app it stays pinned to my Dock. I have no idea what value this feature provides, other than cluttering up your Dock.

It's not for frequently used, it is for recently used. If you use an app (up to 3), then close it, it's there, if you have the app already in the dock, it is not also in the recently used area.

As stated in my other post, I did turn off the feature in Mojave, but have to correct myself, i.e. remains active on my iPad (although easily disabled, if desired) - I've found that on the Pad when reading a book, I can look things up and drop out into Safari, then the Kindle app is sitting in the dock for a quick re-opening to where I left off - of course, more commonly used app icons can be fitted onto the dock w/o the recently open ones taking up space. I find it useful, in a way. I tend to use an app, then find I need it again soon after I've close it, but then after that surge of use, I don't want it on the Dock. So having the "recently used" apps on the Dock is handy for me. They aren't running, aren't in memory, just an icon on the dock like any other.

If you don't like it, turn it off as ROS indicated in post #3.
