I am on High Sierra 10.13.6 on both my MBPro and my iMac.

At the start of November I applied the above security update to my iMac. Apparently all was OK until the next morning when it refused to start. It was coming up with a blank screen with a message about the upgrade failing. Looking on the internet showed a few people having a similar problem but with no obvious solution/remedy. The system restored OK via Time Machine to before I applied the security update and I have been using it perfectly OK since then.

However, I now have the dilemma of what to do about the update. I prefer to apply security updates as they come up but don't feel safe doing so in this instance. I am waiting for Mojave to be a bit more mature before upgrading - although I am not completely sure about my early 2013 MBPro.

Mojave is stable. And if you are still a bit leery about upgrading, make a cloned backup of your system prior to the upgrade. Then, if things go south, restore from the clone. That's what the excellent Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper software is for. Both have free trials and are fully functional.

The only other caution before upgrading is to check on your applications to see if they are compatible with Mojave. You can do that from the Roaring Apps site. https://roaringapps.com/

I've done that and it seems to be OK. It started OK this morning so that's the first hurdle passed. I have not encountered Combo updates before but now the App store is telling me I need to apply the Security Update 2018-002 10.13.6.

Is the Combo update intended to put your system back in order so that further updates can be applied without problem?

If you update to Mojave, it will already include that security update. If you stick with High Sierra, then go ahead and apply it.
