About mojave 10.14.1 'metal support' graphics cards- i own mac pro (mid 2010) machine actually purchased in march 2012. Tried to install new mac os mojave 10.14.1 & informed 'required metal support graphics cards'. Provided a list of compatible graphics cards (with metal support)- before i purchase new graphics card, need to know which is better to use- sapphire radeon pulse rx580 (8gb) or rx560 msi gaming radeon (128 bit, 4gb)? Any knowledge would be appreciated. I know nothing about this subject, never opened a computer in my life, but now simply trying to save the cost of new computer to run the latest upgrades.

What specifically do you need in the new macOS Mojave, that the older macOS High Sierra does not do?

So you are saying this update is not necessary. I understand all updates improve overall system performance (speed, efficiency, etc). Example- on youtube for 1st time in years i experienced slowdown & unable to play video without closing almost all my tabs. For last 1-2 years ive been using youtube with lots of tabs open & never had this problem even 1 time. IF THIS DIDNT HAPPEN, I WAS PLANNING TO HOLD OFF ON UPDATING FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE...

No, I didn't say it wasn't necessary, I was just asking what you thought you would gain from it?

As for your youtube issue, could that also be because of the age of your Mac? Or the drive you are booted from? Or the graphics card being used? Or the browser/version you were using? Or the time of day (internet traffic)? And, maybe has nothing to do with which version of Mac OS X/OS X/macOS you were running?

By the way, what OS are you running on your Mac Pro (Mid 2010)?

Running high sierra 10.13.6 i read something about a 'patch code' to use new mojave 10.14.1 upgrade, but there are also side effects. Also not clear how to install the patch. What are the best advantages in upgrading to mojave- wouldnt it increase chances of yt running smoothly, even at high traffic conditions? Or simply overall system improvement. CURRENT GRAPHICS CARD SAYS- ATI RADEON HD 5770 & FIREFOX IS AT LATEST VERSION #62

Mojave is not going to fix your Youtube slowdown issues. It will have new features/security fixes for sure. But High Sierra will also get security fixes.

Firefox is at latest version #62- another concern is without mojave, i may not be able to get anymore future updates for firefox.

Most apps will use the past 2-3 releases as the base OS for support. So right now it's 10.10 Yosemite and it will switch to 10.11 El Cap at some point. So it'll be another 2-3 more releases of macOS before apps will want 10.14 Mojave to be the base OS. At that point in time, you'll be ready for an upgrade of your Mac anyway.

So ill be able to run high sierra for 2-3 more mac os upgrades (which seems to be released about yearly) until new comp. Will be necessary. (thinking maybe about 2 more years). Thanks for info. What about the so- called 'patch' that lets older macs run the latest mojave, or wouldnt you get the full improvements for mojave with a patch?

So in conclusion, better off waiting to upgrade the entire computer vs. Installing a 100.00 graphics card that may not be compatible with future updates?

The bottom line is your 2010 Mac Pro is capable of running High Sierra and apps will continue to support it for minimally another 3 years, likely a little beyond that. At that point in time, you'll likely be ready for an upgrade anyway. So save any money you would've potentially spent on upgrading any part of the 2010 Mac against the new machine.

High Sierra may get point updates for a bit longer. Once the next version of macOS (10.15 Whatever California Place) shows up, High Sierra updates might stop. But it should still be serviceable.

Today upgraded my adobe flash player from #28 to latest version 31- possibly this would help with video playing?

You should ideally not be using Flash at all. Youtube switched to support HTML5 video a while back and you should be using that. Also which browser are you using?

+1 to Bob's #2 post comment!!!

And BTW, as for Mojave and Metal graphics cards if you do go that direction and which may answer your question, OWC's blog has some interesting info and a recommendation, but also a very interesting note:
Note: According to Apple, you need to update to macOS High Sierra 10.13.6, make sure that your graphics card is compatible, and then turn off FileVault before you upgrade to Mojave on the 2010 and 2012 Mac Pro models.

Is there a "Metal Support" card for Apple's GT120? This board has only 512 MB of VRAM but has been good for driving my second display.

It doesn't look very good just using your basic question as a Google search:
https://www.google.com/search?clien...ort"+card+for+Apple's+GT120&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

Just doing a quick glance, one hit says:
SO, whenever there is an os update or Web Driver delay, these cards all keep working. A GT630/640 thus becomes a good basic card for these machines. A fitting replacement for the GT120, which is now a lovely grey paper weight.
MacVidCards.com - Blog

Check out some of the other hits with that Google search, but I'll bet the answer is probably no.
