Hi, I upgraded to Mojave from Sierra and now have lost internet availability as well as a bunch of apps and my MacBook Pro doesn’t recognize my Passport for Mac.

Can you be more specific what is meant by "lost internet availability"?

- Are we talking at home...at work...somewhere else?
- Are you 100% sure that the location you're at...the WiFi/internet service is working?
- Any additional info may help.

Also...are you sure you're logged into the proper account on your MacBook Pro? Shouldn't lose a "bunch of apps" during an OS upgrade if signing into the same account as always.

Thanks,

Nick

In “Your Macs Specs, it says you’re running Snow Leopard? Is that the same MBP, and you upgraded it to Sierra, or is it a different MBP all together?

The preferences say no internet available. Your computer has no IP address. I can’t switch “turn on WiFi” I can’t enter any info at all. Posts on the internet claim exact same issue. I have full internet on all other devices in the house. Everything is major slow and sometimes doesn’t respond at all. External HDs will not load in finder and that rare moment that they do, brings a message that I don’t have permission and then disappears.

Maybe upgrading to Mojave, which will format the drive to APFS, erased everything on the drive including your settings.

To overcome this, hook up your external backup drive and use Migration Assistant to copy things like your applications and Network settings, passwords, DNS etc over. Of course, you do have an up to date backup the very first thing to do whenever upgrading the OS? And for mine OS X.6.8 to OS X.14 is simp[ly too big a jump and many apps you have been using may well now be obsolete.

It was 10.12 os. Problem again is. I can’t connect any external HD to it. It won’t show up.

Can we back up to get some information? What Mac (look at About This Mac and tell us what it says)? What ISP are you using? What router are you trying to use? Can you get System Preferences to open? From there, can you successfully open Network? If so, on the left side should be all the interfaces, with the active one(s) at the top. What is there? What does the text on the right say? Is the option box saying "Using DHCP?" What IP address are you getting, what is the Router number? With that information, maybe we can get you connected again.

My Mac is a MBP, MID 2012, my ISP is now gone, my router is FIOS. Every other device IS working perfectly. I CAN get to system preferences (after a long wait) and I can open network. I CANNOT do anything from that point on. In network it reads (from top to bottom).. Ethernet not connected, FireWire not connected, thunderbolt not connected, Bluetooth not connected. On the right it reads using DHCP but no info (blank) for IP address, router, etc. also get a message that says Ethernet is connected but your computer has NO IP address. The icon in the top menu bar is greyed out with an X in it. If you click on it either left or right you get the spinning beach ball and then nothing

OK, thanks for that. (Just as an aside, your ISP is not "gone," it's FIOS. And FIOS is providing a router that is also the modem to connect to their network.)

Your list of things from SysPref>Network didn't mention WiFi. Is there no entry for WiFi in that list? Is the WiFi turned on? Do yo have a little WiFi "fan" on the top bar of the screen? Does it have any bars in it? Cal you click on that and get a drop down menu? If so, does it show the FIOS router as one of the options?

Do you have an ethernet cable you could attach to the FIOS router and to your MBP?

The fact everything else is working though FIOS says the modem/router is working just fine. This message about ethernet being connected but no IP address--where and when does it show up? When you did the install of Mojave, was there anything unusual about it? Did you do a full reinstallation or just upgrade over the previous version of the OS? Do you have a current backup available to you?

It's still early in the diagnosing phase, but it looks at this point like the upgrade didn't go well and that you may need to do a reformat/reinstall/restore from backup, if you have one. Don't do that yet, but the number of issues you are having is not a great sign.

And one final thing. Your answers have been a bit cryptic, which is why we have to ask a lot of questions. Remember, we cannot see your machine, or see what you are doing, so you need to explain to us as clearly as you can what you are seeing.

Jake, sorry if it comes across as cryptic, I’m just frustrated as all get out. The WiFi is gone from the left side of network. The button on the right reads “WiFi turned off”. When you click on it it eventually gives a message of no internet available and no isp for computer. The fan at the top menu. Bar is greyed out with an X in it. I installed Mojave about 5-6 days ago. It was an upgrade over an existing os. I didn’t back up but I also can’t connect my external HD (passbook for Mac) to the MBP. It doesn’t show up in finder. When it does...it tells me that I don’t have permission and then disappears. I’m not very good at computer literacy but I’ve held my own for the most part. Again, I apologize if I sounded a little gruff.

Nah, I understand the frustration. From what you have said it may be that the WiFi is failed or failing in the MBP. That's one option. Another is that the install somehow is messed up and the interface to the WiFi is broken somehow and the OS cannot "see" the WiFi interface. The problem with not being able to attach your external drive points more to a software issue.

Just out of curiosity, do you have any third party software installed like antivirus/malware or any other "helper" stuff like CleanMyMac, or the like?

One good thing is that being in the DC Metro area, there are a number of Apple stores available, if you end up going to the Genius Bar to have them take a look.

Yes there are a few 3rd party apps. I am going to try to remove them. I trip to the Genius Bar is prolly the best. I appreciate all your help Jake. I’ll keep you updated. Thanks again.

Did you make a thumb drive with Mojave on it? I would suggest it is time for you to do an erase and install rather than simple upgrades. Make sure you have a good backup first to use Migration Assistant.

Also, if you had a Mid 2012 MBP, it didn’t have Snow Leopard, it either had Lion or Mountain Lion.

I was just thinking the same thing and about to post that little fact. Only some of the 2011 Macs could run Snow Leopard.
