Any Way to Remove a "Real" Word in the Spelling Dictionary, Not a "Learned" Word?

Is there any way to remove an actual word (specifically: "you" and "your") from my Mac's spelling dictionary?

I have done this in some of my Adobe apps so they alert me with a red line to double check proper usage. I'd like the same setup for Mac Mail.

I've already tried typing the word into TextEdit and option-selecting, but there is no "Unlearn Spelling" option.

I've also opened the Spelling folder under Library, but those are just words I've added, not the complete word list.

For what it's worth: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) running OS X 10.11.6

Welcome to our forums.

I don't believe you can alter the built in dictionary. The only edits you can do is to your local dictionary which is found in your user library. You probably already know this, but you're running 3 versions behind for macOS.

In such cases as this, the words are not spelled incorrectly so a spellchecker won't help much, and what you really need is a good grammar checker, one that will choose the proper spelt word for your English usage.

Don't forget to check the applications you normally use on your Mac as quite a few already have a spelling and/or grammar checkers built in as an option.

And for those that don't, you can always use copy/paste from the applications that do.

It's too bad thats not even caught with Apples own Spelling/Grammar checker's eh?? And that's not even the worst of it's behavior.. Sorry… couldn't resist…
And both are enabled as I type this.

But hey, there are a lot of members here and English is not their native language and they can sure use it better than I could use their non-English native language.

I can't take the credit for them as I left the whole job up to Apples own OS X Spelling/Grammar checker. I guess it sort of worked.

I'm pretty sure, but not positive, most spelling/grammar correction utilities have the ability to learn from the user? This may be an issue, if there are multiple people using the same user login?

That's true even for the popular office suites. Those learned items are usually placed in a separate file and can be edited by the user. The spelling dictionary or grammar rules provided by Apple are in a file that can not be changed by the user. Suggesting to the user to employ a third party speller-grammar program is not going to help because the same thing he's trying to avoid will happen with a third party app as well unless that app allows editing of its words and grammar rules.
