Good morning

I wonder if anyone can help me?
I have a MacBook Pro (early 2015) running El Capitan 10.11.6.
Recently MSWord keeps shutting down when I am not using the computer. It doesn’t crash, just shuts down and I have to restart MSWord. I’m running MSWord 2011 version 14.7.7.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards

Rina

Hit CMD+space and then enter Console to start the console app. Now click on User Reports on the left and see if you find any file with a ".crash" ending named Microsoft Word. If you do, click on it and if you can't make heads or tails out of what is being said there, copy the contents and paste it here to give us a clue as to what is going on.

Those look like routine logging messages which aren't super helpful. I was asking about the following:

Hello Ashwin
I couldn't get to the console app the way you suggested. (Hit CMD+space and then Console to up the console app.) so I went applications, utilities, then clicked on the console icon. This doesn't seem to be the same area as your screen shot. Am I right in thinking that the console key is ~? Sorry, but I'm not really au fait with the technical details.
Many thanks.

Rina, that is indeed the right application (Applications->Utilities->Console). I'm running High Sierra, so mine might look a little bit different, but you should look around your version of the app for any file that kind of looks like the one I have in my screenshot.

Hello Ashwin

Which of these areas on the left do I need to open?

I think you will want to select "User Diagnostic Reports", and look in there for the "Word" crash report?

I think you want the User Diagnostic Reports (trying to go from memory).

When I highlight User Diagnostic Reports - nothing shows.

Thanks

You'll have to expand it (hit the arrow on the left) and you will see a a bunch of other options. I can't be more specific than that. Perhaps a member with El Cap will jump in and provide more details.

Hi Rina:

Is there any reason that you leave Word running when not using your MacBook Pro? I too use Word 2011 14.7.7 and when I'm through using it, I close the application. Leaving Word running will use unnecessary memory and may in fact cause errors. Other than perhaps reinstalling Office 2011, I would just shut Word down when you're finished using it. It shouldn't take that long to start it up.

It's especially important to save your documents often especially if you're working on something that you can't afford to lose. MS Word document recovery (especially in the 2011 version) is broken and near impossible to recover a document when an unexpected shut down occurs. Make sure you've selected "Always make a backup" in Word's preferences.

Hello Ashwin
I have used Word today. So far, it hasn't shut down! I've had the lid of my computer almost shut but not completely.
How peculiar!
Fingers crossed that it doens't shut down now that I've posted this!
Many thanks
Rina

On my MBP, Word and Excel take absolutely forever to launch. Every other app comes up instantly and if my workflow required using these apps all the time, I'd be really annoyed by having to turn them off and on constantly. I keep my normally used apps (Chrome, Outlook, Sublime Text, iTerm, Slack) running all the time since those are part of my workflow and would be annoyed if they were constantly crashing.

Well that is good. I will say that I'm running Word 16.17 as part of the Office 365 suite and I've had it running for a few days (by mistake :) ) and it hasn't crashed or failed. So you might want to look into upgrading your Offie suite if you use the applications frequently.

Hello Ashwin
The reason I keep Word open is simply that I'm always doing something so after for example, fifteen minutes, I return to my computer. However, if Word does shut down again, then I'll quit it.
Many thanks
Rina
PS This problem has only recently started.

That hasn't been my experience with Word 2011 or Powerpoint 2011. (I do not use Excel) They startup almost instantly. I do know there is a big difference in startup times if you're using Word 2016 or Excel 2016. Office 2016 is scattered all over the place with separate font folders and associated files.
