I am trying to upgrade my MBP (Late 2013, Hi-Sierra) to Mojave. I keep getting an error message “com.apple.DiskManagement error -69854 “ during the upgrade and then the MBP is left with no Operating System at all! Then I'm forced to restore from TM Backup. I've tried 3 times, with no success. I have a TarDisk memory card installed, to expand my SSD from 512GB to 626GB.
Did any one from this forum tried and succeeded to upgrade to Mojave on a machine with a TarDisk ? (Hybrid MacBook Storage | TarDisk – TarDisk.com)
Thanks

The problem may - I only say may - have to do with TarDisk.

There are reports of problems with macOS High Sierra and I can't find definite confirmation that it works with macOS Mojave.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8084322

Your problem is compounded, so it seems, by having a Hybrid ie Fusion, Internal Hard Drive (IHD).

As I have never used TarDisk expanded storage, I can only go by my Google researches; but it may be that you might have to unload the data on that Disk and remove it before you can get Mojave.

You may wish to wait for wiser counsel, but the Links I provided and others relating to com.apple.DiskManagement error -69854, tend to suggest that's where the problem lies.

Thank you very much for your reply Ian. I wrote to TarDisk support and asked about my problem but they ignored so far my two emails..
I have been using this memory card for a couple of years now and it worked with no problems for me. I will have to decide what is better for me, staying with High Sierra with more storage or moving to Mojave with less storage..
What do you think?
Thanks again!

TarDisk does not support Mojave so I would think the problem is formatting to Apple File System (APFS) which is a must for Mojave.

I was going to ask that but was reluctant to since I ham not familiar with that product. My thought was to do the following:

1. Create a full backup of your system (or better yet a bootable clone).
2. Uninstall the TarDisk unit.
3. Install Mojave
4. Reinstall TarDisk
5. Use Migration Assistannt to move your data / programs back in place from the backup.

I just saw this in the support section of the commpany site
]Sure! If you want to use TarDisk as a secondary volume, that is no problem! It will function similar to an external hard drive (but is always with you)! This is a great option if you want to run a Time Machine Backup.
This was in respomse to a question about running TarDisk as secondary storage (not paired directly with the main drive) In that mode it is not directly paired with the main drive. Since it is only used as extra drive space in this mode, tthe process I outlined might work.

Yes, I am considering doing that.. I’ll just wait a couple more days for the TarDisk help desk to respond to my two emails that I’ve sent them.. So far they are ignoring me unfortunately. Thank you for your help!

How do you know they do not support Mojave? I cannot find anything that says this. I do believe that it is true though.

I emailed last week and have called twice with no answer. I imagine when Apple got rid of all the ports these guys quit. I have gotten it to work, however when I do, I have issues like security and privacy not working in system preferences. Other than that, it works great. For the moment, I am back on High Sierra.

Just to inform the forum:
I have unpaired the TarDisk according to their instructions, erased the SSD and restored from TM Backup. The upgrade to Mojave went just fine after that!
Then I reformated the TarDisk to Mac format andd i'm using it like a second drive. Thanks again to all respnders!

Easy answer. Go to the TarDisk.com website...and read the FAQ's. Technically the TarDisk folks say the TarDisk is only compatible up to macOS "Sierra". Mojave is two OS versions past this.

Thus officially...the TarDisk is not officially supported with High Sierra or Mojave.

Thanks Nic. Basically they have not been updating their site since Apple stopped including SD card slots. That's kind of poor on Tardisk's part. Other than that, it has been great to have. Thanks again.

Ahh I see...that's a shame.:(

If this is true...I guess they're ignoring the fact that even without an SD card slot...owners of newer Apple portable computers still would like more storage space. And that the "no SD card slot" issue (I would think)...should be solvable with a adapter such as this (only $8.99):
