I'm trying to create a bootable Mojave USB drive. I've done this many times before with previous OSs.
I have downloaded the full Mojave installer and when I issue the terminal command:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Mojave.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Mojave --nointeraction

I am getting the following error:
To use this tool, you must download the macOS installer application on a Mac with 10.12.5 or later, or El Capitan 10.11.6. For more information, please see the following: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201372.

I have tried this on two Macs, one has OS 10.11.6 and the other 10.12.6

If that command is fighting you, give Diskmaker X a shot.

I tried the Apple way first (see my original post). It tells me I have the wrong OS version, and I dont. I have tried this on two Macs, one has OS 10.11.6 and the other 10.12.6

Looks like your attempt of using the Apple way might have messed things up. The first FAQ for Diskmaker X tells you how to resolve this issue.

So I tried this way https://www.imore.com/how-create-bootable-installer-mac-operating-system as pigoo suggested. I get the same error about not having the correct OS.

I also tried what Raz0rEdge suggested, looking in the volumes folder, but the only items listed were the hard drive and thumb drive.

Im stumped. Apple is making thing harder and harder to do simple things. I shoulnt have to waste days with this!

Did you see this, "* If your Mac is using macOS Sierra or earlier, include the --applicationpath argument. The Sierra and El Capitan commands show the proper format of this argument." when you tried it?

You are trying to download an installer which expects that you will have the preceding macOS already ie. High Sierra. My suggestion would be to download and install High Sierra OS 10.13 and update everything first. This is always a good idea in any case. This will also convert your OS filing system to APFS which will be compatible with Mojave. You may well find that the Apple way (using Terminal) will then work. In the past before the introduction of the new filing system upgrading to an OS 2-3 versions above the one you had was no big deal although ideally sequential updating is usually best due to software versions.
You will also need the latest version of DismakerX if you choose to go that way.
Lastly check that your devices are compatible with Mojave first (and High Sierra). A simple Google search for compatibility will tell you that.

And I'm sure you have already beaten this idea to death, but do remember that Diskmaker X is OS specific. In other words, there is a specific Diskmaker X download for each OS.

JackPollock - have you solved this? I am having the exact same problem. Have tried on multiple computers. Have tried all steps listed above. I have tried Diskmaker as well. This is not my first time i have done this with previous os' so I'm not a total noob.

The end problem I am trying to solve is actually this... https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macos-mojave-wont-install-not-supported-core-storage.2142491/ ... to net it out, I had upgraded my 27" iMac with an SSD and tried installing Mojave. But because the Fusion drive is not formatted as apfs it won't work. Problem is there is no way to format a fusion drive with APFS unless you do it with Mojave, it seems. So I need a bootable mojave so I can boot up my mac, format the fusion drive with APFS and install Mojave.

Last weekend I put my original HDD back in my Mac mini, and installed Yosemite. Then today I was able to upgrade from Yosemite to Mojave, and it formatted the drive as APFS, with no issues.

I didn't see anything different in the link provided. I have always used some variant of this command to create all my mac usb bootable images. '/Applications/Install\ macOS\ Mojave.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/UNTITLED'. I am now getting the error mentioned to start this thread. I am doing it from macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. I deleted the macOS Mojave application and re-downloaded it from the apple store to get install version 10.14.1 rather than 10.14. I cut and pasted the same command from my notes to create the new media; this computer was able to create 10.14 with 10.14 but not 10.14.1 from 10.14.1...

To use this tool, you must download the macOS installer application on a Mac with 10.12.5 or later, or El Capitan 10.11.6. For more information, please see the following: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201372.

Is your internal drive an HDD or SSD? I have a feeling, this is where the issue is coming from?

I just did it on my mini, and I have an SSD.

SSD.

I have several Macs. I was able to get it to work. I had to run the same command on a mac already running Mojave, But I had to re-download the Mojave on that mac. It is like createinstallmedia is not doing a proper version check.

I am always making the most current mac os usb install media...
