Mid 2010 iMac, running Sierra 10.12.6. Can I update? Should I update?

I don’t want to update my Mac if it’s going to cause a problem.

2.8 GHz Intel Core i5
8GB 1333 MHz DDR3

It’s working okay, occasional beachball.

Double-backed-up: hardwired to a MyBook, wireless to a TimeCapsule.

Update what?

Do you mean, upgrade to High Sierra? If that is what you mean, you should at the very least, download the installer file for High Sierra, so you can do the upgrade at a later date, if you choose to. The reason I say this, is because within two weeks that option will be removed from the macOS App Store.

Do what Bob said. Grab a copy of the High Sierra installer at least. Since you are post 10.10, most of the software will continue to work for a while. Your machine can only go up to High Sierra (Mojave needs a post-2012 Mac), so at some point in time you will want to upgrade when apps you use start claiming High Sierra as the minimum requirement.

Thanks all. Here’s hoping the High Sierra updates went well on my iMac & MBP. I had to step out.

The biggest issue you may want to consider is if you have any user installed apps that you paid for...and wouldn't be compatible with High Sierra. For example you could have some older apps that are compatible with Sierra...but not High Sierra.

If is not the case...then go for it.

Well, the iMac took High Sierra. The 2011 MBP did not. I now remember that the MBP rejected it earlier. I called Apple then and they said to restore from a backup and I could try again in the future (which was now). Fortunately, the MBP also backs up to the TimeCapsule.

I guess I’ll restore it again and put a note (in sharpie) on them both: "DO NOT FURTHER UPDATE THE OS”.

Thanks again for your help. My husband buys the stuff, then tells me to “make it work."
