Airplay Volume Changes

I use my iMac to Airplay music to my Apple TV, connected to my AVR and speakers. When I start the Airplay the volume is about ⅓ max. I then set it to near max for playback and control the system volume with the AVR. If I leave Airplay for some reason and then return to Airplay, the volume has reset to ⅓ again. How can I get the volume to stay at max when I go in and out of Airplay?
Thanks

So, nobody has a solution to this?

I don't but I'm wondering if there might be something related in this article that you could use??

How to adjust the EQ (audio levels) on your HomePod
https://www.imore.com/how-adjust-eq-audio-levels-your-homepod

Otherwise, check out some if the hits here maybe???:
https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=can+Airplay+Volume+be+preset&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

Can the AVR not boost or use the default 1/3 volume????

Sorry, not much help for you that I can think of.

Thanks for the suggestions, but none of them seemed to have anything to help. Yes, I could adjust the volume on the AVR, but it would be so high that when I go to another function on the AVR, if I have not remembered to lower the volume, I would get blasted. With the volume on the Airplay at max, the AVR volume stays in a reasonable range for all other functions as well. Still looking for a solution......

Have you used your System Prefs Sound to:
- show volume in menu bar using the checkbox option??? That sure makes access to set the volume quick and easy. May also help save blowing out some speakers at some point as well.

- set the volume level you want for when your Apple TV is selected. The Volume in menubar allows that as well for both output source and volume level.

I would expect the preference for the Apple TV to stick and remain in between uses, but maybe not.

And just one other thought, and I'm not sure if would work or not, but maybe have a look at using Audio MIDI Setup app but I don't know if it works with the Apple TV or not. If it does, it should be able to be set to a preset volume level, but maybe too involved to get it enabled each time you want to use it.

I would think just using the Volume icon (menubar) would be easiest and safest, and gee, maybe two or three clicks shouldn't be too much of any extra time or effort. :Smirk:

EDIT: Maybe this may help if it still works:
Turn it up to 11: How and when to use OS X's advanced audio controls
https://www.macworld.com/article/26...hen-to-use-os-xs-advanced-audio-controls.html

However, as with so many other things in OS X, you can tweak its audio settings—in the Output and Input tabs of the Sound pane of System Preferences—in all sorts of interesting ways if you wish.

Yes, I have the volume setting in the Menu Bar.

That is the way I adjust the volume now.

That's the reason for this thread, the volume does NOT stick.

Tried changing many MIDI settings. No help.

Yeah, it's not hard to change the volume, but I don't want to have to do it EVERY time! I also noticed that the same volume setting comes up for other AirPlay devices (ATVs), always about ⅓ volume. It must be some default Apple has set up for Airplay/ATV. If I Airplay directly to my Denon AVR, the volume setting will remain where it was set last time.

That's the way I would have expected it to work as well, but I guess that's not the case.

OK, but isn't that the way you wanted the volume to work?

Maybe I'm not understanding how you are using and setting the Airplay output to the Denon AVR that I gather is connected to your Apple TV.

OK, to clarify. I mostly Airplay my iMac screen to the ATV, which goes thru the Denon to the TV. Thus, I get video of the iMac screen and any associated audio, such as Tidal music, YouTube videos, etc. However, if I just want to listen to music, Audiovana directly streams to the Denon, bypassing some of the iMac sound processing and the ATV, and supposedly results in better audio quality. I tend to agree with that from my limited experience. So, volume stays where it was last set for the direct stream to the Denon, but changes if streamed thru the ATV. I hope that makes the situation a little clearer....

Thanks, that makes things much clearer.

I gather the Denon is AirPlay capable on it's own and doesn't really need the Apple TV, but I have no idea why the AirPlay settings would stick for the Denon but not for via the ATV. That doesn't make any sense to me.

I wonder if you could wire them and their connections differently so that the audio and video are going through separate connections and cables.

Just a thought and I'll leave it with you to contemplate.

Yes, the Denon is AirPlay capable and bypasses the ATV. But, as I said, most of the time I am AirPlaying thru the ATV to my TV, 65" OLED, as my computer screen while reclining in my HT chairs, perusing emails, watching YouTube videos, and listening to music in the background (sweet) . Often I switch back to just watching TV, thus going out of AirPlay, and when I go back I have to change the volume again. It's not a huge deal, but just annoying.

Anyway, thanks so much for your comments. Much appreciated. If I don't get any other suggestions, I may just have to live with it......

I think I just inadvertently stumbled upon the solution. In addition to the volume problem, when I Airplay from the iMac to the ATV, all of my 4 ATVs would show up on the list to Airplay to. And, every time I would restart Airplay, the order of the ATVs in the list changes. Not a problem if I'm sitting at the iMac, but, if I am sitting in the HT chair with the iMac desktop Airplaying to the TV, I would have to remember where the ATV I want to go to is in the list of 4 ATVs when I want to go out of Airplay and then back in. So, I wondered how to get the other 3 ATVs off of the list since I rarely, if ever, Airplay to them. I found that if I turned off Airplay on each of the other 3 ATVs individually, they were deleted from the iMac Airplay list, leaving only the ATV I want. Although it is early in my tests, it also seems that now that I have only 1 ATV on the list, the volume now stays put to where I last set it. Sure hopes this works, as it solves two annoying problems at once. I'll be back if I find it is not working as I think it is now.......

Great to hear you came up with a solution. I do have a question though and it's out of curiosity. You obviously are doing something special with 4 ATVs. Do you have a home theature system?

I do have a HT system, but it has little to do with the 4 ATVs. I cut the cable cord over a year ago and have been using a streaming service, Playstation Vue now switching to YouTube TV, for the 4 TVs in the house. I stream those thru the ATVs.
